Rockdale's rural feel is gradually shifting toward suburban
Rockdale is a suburban community south of Ashland with a rural small-town feel, but it might not stay that way for long. The community has well-regarded schools that are growing, and nearby commercial options along U.S. Highway 60 are increasing. Despite the growth, residents still maintain their social traditions and access to natural areas. Although indoor facilities like Camp Landing have been a welcome addition to the local economy too. "Boyd County has a great school district. People that live out there may never want to move to Ashland because they want more of the country living," says Realtor Alison Christie of Ross Real Estate. "There's pretty good community spirit vibes. Some people definitely want to live in the county and not the city, and they feel pretty strongly about that. But other than that, there's a lot of cooperation between the city and the county."
Several new school campuses planned for Boyd County
Most students in Rockdale begin school at Summit Elementary, rated B-minus by Niche. Although a few students are zoned for Cannonsburg Elementary, rated C. Schools in Boyd County are undergoing a transformation period as state and county leaders work to distribute millions in funds for new or improved campuses. That's led to the construction of new schools for Rockdale students, including a new Cannonsburg Elementary and a new Boyd County High School, rated B-minus and known for its championship athletics. For grades six through eight, students attend Boyd County Middle School, which is C-rated and currently does not have plans for a new campus.
Rockdale families attend Cannonsburg Elementary for early education close to home.

Slower residential development
Rockdale has seen a few new builds since the early 2000s, but not many. Most new builds have been custom-designed homes that have trickled into established neighborhoods full of ranch-style homes from the 20th century. "We don't have a lot of new builds, so they just pop up when needed," Christie says. "As far as homes that we have for sale right now, we are very low on inventory. I would say we could do with some newer builds, perhaps that's coming in the future." Ranch-style homes are the most common option for buyers, who typically pay between $150,000 and $275,000 for such properties. Those looking to buy something from the current century often pay between $275,000 and $500,000.

Hiking to Bigfoot statues on trails in Armco Park
There are no public parks in Rockdale, but residents are not far from many options for recreation. Armco Park is about a 5-minute drive north of Rockdale and is a preferred spot for picnics, family reunions and other gatherings. Several miles of trails take visitors past playgrounds and through mountainous woodlands once used for iron mining. Nowadays, the forest is home to dozens of military-related landmarks, like war memorials, decommissioned army tanks and cannons used in the American Revolution, plus a few hand-carved statues of Bigfoot. In the opposite direction of Rockdale, the entertainment district of Camp Landing provides no shortage of indoor activities. "There's quite a few things to do in Camp Landing," Christie says. "There's a Malibu Jack's, there's axe throwing. There's also Tap That Sports, where you can take your golf clubs and do virtual sports, that's a really fun activity."

Barbecue and beer taps at Camp Landing restaurants
Camp Landing is just as much a dining destination as it is a recreational hotspot. The expansive array of cuisines includes pizza and raw bar combos, barbecue smokehouses with loads of craft beer taps and quick fixes, like cheesesteaks from Almost Philly. U.S. Highway 60's commercial offerings are not limited to Camp Landing though. The commercial corridor is home to a Walmart Supercenter, numerous fast-food restaurants, drive-thru convenience stores and small shopping centers like Mead Station, home to cigar lounges, sporting goods stores and homey grills like Red's Place.

Church congregations and high school football games
Residents have a few common ways to mingle with neighbors. "We are a very faithful community with a lot of churches and a lot of Southern values. You're not going to see someone grabbing the parking space in front of you at the mall or at Camp Landing. We're just going to wave and smile," Christie says. Several Baptist and nondenominational Christian churches are scattered in and around Rockdale, like Gospel Light Baptist Church, which hosts special events like couples retreats and Christmas parties in addition to regular services and ministries. Football games for the Boyd County High School Lions are also a popular way for students and parents to meet up. "It's a big deal. The whole community gets involved in high school sports," Christie says.
Easy commutes to Ashland and Huntington
Using U.S. 60, drivers can reach downtown Ashland in roughly 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic, which tends to increase during peak commuting hours. Drivers can also drive about 10 minutes south to reach Interstate 64 for longer trips to jobs and nearby cities like Huntington.
Flood zones along Shope Creek
A sizeable flood zone cuts through the center of Rockdale, affecting some residential areas near Shopes Creek Road. This is caused by a confluence of numerous creeks and streams in Rockdale's southwest corner, forming the flood-prone Little Sandy River. There is also a mild risk of wildfires in lesser-developed areas. However, according to data from the National Interagency Fire Center, all recent wildfire incidents in and around Rockdale were less than 3 acres in size.
