Locals get homemade fixings at Two Sisters Homestyle Cafe
Locally owned restaurants welcome their neighbors to join in for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some dine in or order out at Two Sisters Homestyle Cafe. Others grab lunch from BJ’s Diner. Lala’s draws a crowd for dinner. The stone exterior catches the eye of locals, but their food, drinks and books make Lala’s a repeat spot for hanging out.

Beating the Alabama heat at the splash pad
Kids spend their summers at Ashville Park and Splash Pad to have outdoor fun while cooling off in the Alabama heat and humidity. D. O. Langston Park features a paved walking track for anyone looking to get their steps in. Senior citizens might walk around before visiting the Senior Center next door for game night. Ashville residents who live closer to Odenville take their kids to the Odenville City Park to climb around the playground equipment. Those who want to scale mountains and see stunning scenery as they hike visit Horse Pens 40 in Steele, 15 miles away. Luker describes the mountainous scenery as “breathtaking.” The park also hosts events, like the biannual Horse Pens 40 Bluegrass & Arts Fest, which involves two nights of live music and camping. “It’s been around forever, and it’s very, very popular,” says Luker.

Driving the long Ashville roads
Ashville spans over 100 square miles, so residents have to rely on their cars to get to the town center or visit neighboring cities. The St. Clair County Public Transportation system (SCAT) provides transportation for those who can’t easily get to their doctor’s appointments or senior citizen centers. They charge a small fee as fare and need to be contacted for transport since there isn’t a set route.
