Welcome to small-town living in Ashville

Located 44 miles northwest of Birmingham and at the southern tip of the Appalachian Mountains, Ashville sits in one of the oldest counties in Alabama. The area overflows with natural beauty, primarily made up of farmland and clusters of tall trees. Interstate 59 and U.S. Route 411 can take residents directly to Downtown Birmingham in about half an hour. People move to Ashville to get closer to nature and further away from busy city life. Simplicity thrives in Asheville as residents live in homes with classic, straightforward designs on quiet streets. Even though the neighborhood can feel isolated, residents still have access to popular schools, a Piggly Wiggly and locally owned restaurants. When locals want more big city amenities, they hop in their cars and take a short drive south to Birmingham or north to Gadsden.

Living the simple life in ranch or craftsman homes

Julie Luker, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Pell City, describes the available houses as, “mainly garden homes and high-end communities.” Houses come in a variety of styles, including ranch-style houses with side-gabled roofs and front porches, raised ranch homes and manufactured homes. Newly built homes tend to feature Craftsman-style designs. Prices can range from $250,000 for a ranch-style home with 1,750 square feet of living space on a small lot to $650,000 for a house with 3,600 square feet of living space on 10 acres of land. Newly built Craftsman homes can fall in the $440,000 to $600,000 range. Open lots wait for developers or future homeowners ready to build their dream homes.

Locals get homemade fixings at Two Sisters Homestyle Cafe

Locally owned restaurants welcome their neighbors to join in for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some dine in or order out at Two Sisters Homestyle Cafe. Others grab lunch from BJ’s Diner. Lala’s draws a crowd for dinner. The stone exterior catches the eye of locals, but their food, drinks and books make Lala’s a repeat spot for hanging out.

Piggly Wiggly serves Ashville with plenty of fresh meat and staple ingredients to choose from. When locals need a wider selection of groceries, they drive out to the Walmart Supercenter in Springville, 13 miles away. Anyone needing fresh clothes might visit House of Hope Thrift, but those who want to shop at a nearby mall drive 24 miles north to the Gadsden Mall.

Beating the Alabama heat at the splash pad

Kids spend their summers at Ashville Park and Splash Pad to have outdoor fun while cooling off in the Alabama heat and humidity. D. O. Langston Park features a paved walking track for anyone looking to get their steps in. Senior citizens might walk around before visiting the Senior Center next door for game night. Ashville residents who live closer to Odenville take their kids to the Odenville City Park to climb around the playground equipment. Those who want to scale mountains and see stunning scenery as they hike visit Horse Pens 40 in Steele, 15 miles away. Luker describes the mountainous scenery as “breathtaking.” The park also hosts events, like the biannual Horse Pens 40 Bluegrass & Arts Fest, which involves two nights of live music and camping. “It’s been around forever, and it’s very, very popular,” says Luker.

Shooting for gold at Ashville High

Kids stay in the Ashville school system until they graduate. They start out at Ashville Elementary School, which gets a B from Niche. After learning at the B-rated Ashville Middle School, they move on to Ashville High School, the oldest school in St. Clair County. Students at Ashville High might join the archery team to hone their aim, try out for the championship-winning Jr. High Girls’ basketball team or participate in 4-H. Ashville High gets a B-minus. All three schools neighbor each other, making it an easy transition when kids move up a grade. An alternative and technical school sit in the neighborhood, giving parents additional options as they need them.

Driving the long Ashville roads

Ashville spans over 100 square miles, so residents have to rely on their cars to get to the town center or visit neighboring cities. The St. Clair County Public Transportation system (SCAT) provides transportation for those who can’t easily get to their doctor’s appointments or senior citizen centers. They charge a small fee as fare and need to be contacted for transport since there isn’t a set route.

Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
