Two trailheads of the Astoria Riverwalk
Alderbrook is sprinkled with outdoor spaces, like Alderbrook Park, which has a playground, basketball court and shaded picnic shelter. Just a couple blocks away, LaPlante Park is surrounded by a few homes and a densely wooded shoreline. The green space comes equipped with a swing set and a small play structure for kids. The paved Astoria Riverwalk weaves along the adjacent woods alongside the railroad tracks and the Columbia River waterfront. There are two trailheads in Alderbrook—one that starts near LaPlante Park and another that branches off Alder Street further east. “The loop around the Riverwalk takes around 45 minutes,” Doss says. “It’s a great dog walk.”Modern eateries in repurposed canneries on Pier 39
Alderbrook is less than a mile and a half away from Pier 39, a unique shopping and dining center in Astoria on a repurposed pier. Misty morning views of the Columbia River are enjoyed with latte art and a homemade pastry from Coffee Girl, in what used to be the oldest cannery in the West. Rogue built its Astoria brewery in the adjacent former Bumble Bee Tuna cannery, one of several locations throughout Oregon, known as Rogue Pier 39 Public House. The menu at Rogue Pier 39 includes an elevated take on fish and chips—made with rockfish or salmon—alongside 30 local beers on tap. OleBob’s Seafood Market has also set up shop on Pier 39, selling fresh and cooked seafood, while Safeway is nearby for groceries.Homes from the turn of the 19th century
Like most of Astoria, Alderbrook is composed of historic homes that predate World War I. Original Craftsman homes built in the first two decades of the 20th century and Victorian homes from the last decade of the 19th century color residential streets in varying shades of blue that echo the vast water that lies beyond them. These homes may cost between $625,000 and $650,000, while smaller Craftsman cottages built before the 1950s may cost between $300,000 and $350,000.Leif Erikson Drive connects to downtown and Pier 39
Highway 30—locally known as Leif Erikson Drive—runs across the southern half of Alderbrook, passing Alderbrook Park and Safeway on its way downtown. The thoroughfare also connects to 39th Street, which leads north to Pier 39, Coffee Girl and Rogue Pier 39 Public House. The Northwest Connector’s Astoria line stops at both LaPlante and Alderbrook parks, eventually reaching downtown Astoria and Warrenton in the west.Fishery and marine science at Astoria High
The Astoria School District serves children in Alderbrook, and each school in the system receives a B grade from Niche. The youngest students can attend John Jacob Astor Elementary School for kindergarten through second grade before potentially moving forward to Lewis and Clark Elementary School, third through fifth, and Astoria Middle School. With the neighborhood’s origins as a fishing community, Astoria High School offers science courses like fisheries biology, fisheries tech and marine biology. Students can also join several after-school clubs and programs, like National Ocean Sciences Bowl, Sunday Market Young Entrepreneurs and Steam Locomotive Restoration Shop.
