Get away from it all in the Borough of Atglen, where quiet suburban living is brought to Chester County’s rural countryside, tucked between the rolling hills.
Robbyn Kehoe, Director of Atglen Library, has lived in Atglen for more than 30 years ago. She says, “I love Atglen because it’s not as busy as the rest of the county. That’s really why most people move here because life is much slower.”
Mixing the old with the new, Atglen features homes from the late 1800s through the 1990s. Modern colonial-style homes in the borough’s more recent developments range from $300,000 to $400,000. They’re typically around 2,000 square feet, located on half-acre lots, offering comfortable yard space. You’ll feel like you’ve been taken back in time as you head closer to Valley Avenue and Main Street. That’s where you’ll find colonial and Victorian-style homes from the late 19th century. They’re perfect for those looking for a home with historic charm in the $250,000 to $300,000 price range.
“The older homes are gorgeous,” says Kehoe, “I live in one, and they’re just lovely to look at and quintessential of Chester County.”
Along with the beautiful homes, you’ll come across picturesque views of horses grazing farmland. And you may end up crossing Mercer’s Mill Covered Bridge, another piece of history from the 19th century. It goes over one of the many creeks that flow through the area, where kids can play on rope swings and jump in the water. Children also have fun on the playground at Atglen Community Park, which has a pavilion with picnic tables where you can gather with friends and family. What’s really getting locals excited is the addition of access to the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail, which will connect Philadelphia to Harrisburg.
“The rail trail is a big deal for us,” says Kehoe, “We love our rail trails, and it’s really going to sustain this already strong community.”
Locals can visit Atglen Library to read a book or use a computer with free internet access. Or you can take and leave a book in the box outside the historic stone borough hall. The closest restaurants and retailers are located in Parkesburg, about three miles east, which doesn’t seem to mind locals like Kehoe.
“It’s great because we’re in this quiet corner where you’re not bothered,” says Kehoe, “But you have everything you need just a short drive away.”
Students are served by the Octorara Area School District, with all four of its schools located right next to each other and rated a B- from Niche. They include a primary learning center for kindergarten through second-grade students, Octorara Elementary School, which teaches third and fourth-grade classes, Octorara Intermediate School, a fifth and sixth-grade school and Octorara Area Junior-Senior High School.
Atglen’s closest major city is Lancaster, about 20 miles west. You’re also about 35 miles from Reading and 50 miles from Philadelphia. If you don’t want to drive to the City of Brotherly Love, you can take an Amtrak train from the station in nearby Parkesburg.
