Adair Park has community pride and historic homes

Adair Park residents take so much pride in their neighborhood that they even have their own flag.

The flags display a bungalow with the inscription Historic Adair Park, which is fitting because the community is teeming with early 1900s craftsman-style bungalow homes.

“The flags almost look like a stained-glass window. People hang them on the outside of their homes,” says Stephanie Porter, owner of Yes 2 This Address real estate company. “It’s a close-knit community. People take a lot of pride in living there.”

Renovated homes with vintage charm

Many of the vintage homes in the area have been completely renovated, yet still retain original details such as wood floors, door handles and fireplace mantles. Others have yet to be updated. There are also some recently constructed homes in the traditional craftsman style with views of the Atlanta skyline. “It’s very charming. It’s in the middle of gentrification, so it’s still changing,” Porter said. “The ones that need to be renovated are in the $200,000s and the ones that have been renovated are in the high $400,000 to $650,000 range. It’s a historic district so they are very strict on preserving the historic elements of the homes.”

Neighborhood festivals bring people together

Residents attend neighborhood events such the annual Porches and Pies festival, which includes a baking contest, kid-friendly activities, and an artist’s market. “People really participate in festivals down there and there is something going on every week,” Porter says. “Back in the day we had to go to Atlanta to do something, but now every little neighborhood has their own thing going on.”

MET Atlanta is a hub for food and shopping

For shopping and dining, there’s the MET Atlanta. Located in a former warehouse, the MET offers boutique shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Feast on a heaping plate of pulled pork or ribs at Rodney Scott’s BBQ. But leave room for the hush puppies and honey butter, as one patron swears they’re worth every calorie. Slim and Husky’s is another local go-to for pizza and cinnamon rolls. Spend a night out at the nearby Lee + White development, which hosts breweries with creative craft beers, such as Monday Night and Wild Heaven.

Parks, trails, and transportation

Adair Park has two namesake parks – Adair Park I and Adair Park II, which offer playgrounds, baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts. If all these options aren’t enough, the neighborhood is partially bordered by the Atlanta BeltLine Trail, a paved trail that circles the city. People use the trail to walk, bike, or ride scooters to the hundreds of restaurants, shops and eateries along the BeltLine. There are also two MARTA train stations in the neighborhood, making for a quick commute to downtown Atlanta, which is less than 5 miles away. “The traffic is really bad in Atlanta so anytime you can take the MARTA that makes a big difference,” Porter says. “It saves you headaches.”

Atlanta Public Schools serves about 50,000 students

The neighborhood is populated with people who have lived there their whole lives in the community and younger couples who have recently moved to the area. The area is part of the Atlanta Public Schools system, which serves roughly 50,000 students.
