Colorful shops, green spaces and community events converge in East Atlanta
From its collection of early 20th-century bungalows to the storefronts covered in murals, East Atlanta is a residential enclave with vibrant urban appeal. Locally referred to as EAV, East Atlanta Village is an entertainment district within the neighborhood, offering a bustling bar scene, eclectic eateries and locally owned retailers. “It’s a walkable cultural hub totally separate from downtown Atlanta,” says Realtor Jeff Raw, a team leader with Keller Williams Realty Metro Atlanta who has sold several homes in the area. “There’s always something going on in this neighborhood, whether it’s live music in the EAV or a children’s event in Brownwood Park. The East Atlanta Strut is a one-day porchfest, and that’s the most significant event here.”

Shopping and dining on Flat Shoals and Glenwood avenues
Along Flat Shoals and Glenwood avenues, EAV is lively at all hours. Breakfast goers can get a latte at Joe’s Coffeehouse or a bagel made with New York City water at Emerald City. Wood-fired pizza, craft beer and shuffleboard tables are at Argosy, a nautical-themed gastropub. The Earl is a watering hole known for its rustic interior and outdoor music venue, hosting local and nationally known performers. Flatiron and The Midway Pub are two other casual mainstays for drinks and bar food. Shoppers can buy the latest novel at Bookish or pick up vintage vinyl at Black Habit Records. Though residents won’t find many chain options in the neighborhood, a Publix Supermarket is 2 miles away on Memorial Drive.

East Atlanta offers everything from vintage bungalows to contemporary homes
East Atlanta’s sidewalk-lined streets are brimming with homes from various decades. Homebuyers will find turn-of-the-century Craftsman bungalows, brick-façade ranch-styles built throughout the midcentury, as well as neo-traditional homes. “Contemporary houses have popped up within the last five years,” Raw says. “Most houses are in top-notch condition, but people are buying for the location and renovating down to the studs.” Homes typically cost between $400,000 and $700,000. “I think there’s a better quality of living in East Atlanta. You’re not too far from the heart of Atlanta, but the air feels a little cleaner and there’s more green space,” says Timmothy McCann, a broker associate with EXP Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area for 20 years. “There are a lot of trees in that area. Most of the properties have about a quarter-acre of land.”

Fun at Brownwood Park and hiking through Ormewood Forest
The recently renovated Brownwood Park has new playground equipment, tennis and basketball courts, a community garden and a recreation center. The 12-acre green space on Brownwood Avenue also offers a wood-chip trail beside Intrenchment Creek. The East Atlanta Kids Club operates out of the rec center and provides afterschool programs and summer camps. People of all ages enjoy the club’s annual Brownwood Bike Rally, a fall event ending with face painting, lawn games and a barbecue. “Brownwood Park is considered the heart of East Atlanta,” Raw says. Hikers can wander the six-acre Ormewood Forest on Ormewood Avenue, where they’ll find hardwood trees, a headwater stream and numerous birds, like green herons and barred owls. “It’s not like you have to go out to the country to enjoy nature,” McCann says. “It’s all right here.”
East Atlanta is surrounded by ample golfing facilities less than 3 miles away, like the 18-hole East Lake Golf Club or the nine-hole Charlie Yates Golf Course. DeKalb Memorial Park on Wilkinson Drive has an 18-hole disc golf option. The neighborhood has a few other community hubs, like the half-dozen houses of worship sprinkled throughout the neighborhood and the East Atlanta Branch Library on Flat Shoals Avenue. Residents will also find 1,300 animals less than 5 miles away at Zoo Atlanta on Cherokee Avenue.
