Glenrose Heights is a south Atlanta neighborhood of more than 5,000 people located alongside Interstate 75. A mostly rental community with apartment complexes dotting the northern end, Glenrose Heights has its own park, creek, playground and after-school programs, plus a small business hub that includes a home goods store, an auto parts store and a barbershop. “It’s a very well-known area," says five-year resident Serena Muhammed. "You know your neighbor, and we do community things together.”

Ranch-style housing from the 50s and 60s, plus rentals

Most of the ranch-style housing along Oak Drive was built in the 50s and 60s, with prices ranging between $200,000 and $470,000. There are also several duplexes between $250,000 and $390,000 on the southeastern end, as well as a few bungalows and A-frame houses in the north between $170,000 to $250,000. There’s also a townhome complex in Monticello starting at $344,000, and rental homes are available along Mount Zion Road starting at $1,066 per month.

Atlanta Public Schools with a focus on STEAM learning

Glenrose Heights is zoned for Atlanta Public Schools, and its school pipeline starts at Heritage Academy, which was rated a C on Niche and has its own STEM program. Crawford Long Middle School also earned a C and offers several after-school enrichment programs, while South Atlanta High School serves over 900 students and was rated a C-minus. Muhammed also offers her own STEAM activities and workshops through Science Creations. “We have a garden, we have animals, we have chickens, we have goats,” Muhammed says.

MARTA offers bus stops around around Empire Boulevard

Multiple bus stops are located around the neighborhood thanks to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s Empire Boulevard Route, which provides rides between Harper Park and Lakewood/Fort McPherson Station. Railway connections link the station to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport 6 miles south, and the Metropolitan Parkway route provides convenient access to Concentra Urgent Care, which is 2 miles southwest and is open for 24 hours.

Located alongside an extensive parks system, Glenrose Heights has many options when it comes to outdoor recreation. The closest playground is within neighborhood limits at Empire Park, which also has its own basketball and tennis courts. Browns Mill Park has an 18-hole golf course a mile and a half northeast, while swimming and diving sessions occur at the Rosel Fann Natatorium. Glenrose Heights has a small business presence throughout the community. Nomadic Exotics is a local auto dealership that sells used concierge vehicles, while the LOS Liquidation Outlet Store offers housing essentials at reasonable prices. The SAVE Institute is a local nonprofit that advocates for black youth, and groceries can be picked up at Piggly Wiggly in the northeast.
