What makes Margaret Mitchell a family-friendly neighborhood
Margaret Mitchell is a west Buckhead community named after the author of “Gone with the Wind.” While she never lived in the neighborhood, she did attend Westminster Schools here in the early 1900s, back when it was an all-girls campus. Today, Westminster is a private, coeducational school serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Being home to this highly rated school is one of the neighborhood’s biggest draws. Kids can walk or bike along sidewalk-lined streets to get there, or to the local public school. Beyond its family-friendly feel, the neighborhood also stands out for its convenient access to major highways, a busy commercial corridor and one of Atlanta's largest parks.
Quiet, well-kept streets lined with stately homes create a family-friendly atmosphere.

Popular mid-20th-century home styles are available
Margaret Mitchell is known for its sprawling ranch-style homes and split-level houses built in the mid-20th century. Even though there are also some newer builds in the neighborhood, these older homes tend to be more popular with buyers. “Almost all of them have already been updated, but they still feel true to their original era, with big picture windows and open floor plans,” says Gabby Gray, an associate broker with Beacham & Company who has sold several homes in the neighborhood.

How much housing costs in the neighborhood
The median sale price in Margaret Mitchell is around $1.1 million, which is significantly more than Atlanta’s median of about $425,000. However, it’s slightly lower than what you’ll find in other Buckhead neighborhoods, including Peachtree Battle and Memorial Park. Prices here usually range from the lower $800,000s to the upper $2 millions, depending on a home’s size and age. The neighborhood also has a few townhouses, typically selling between the lower $400,000s and the upper $500,000s.
Westminster is a Christian, independent co-ed school.
Kids attend Atlanta Public Schools or the private Westminster Schools
Margaret Mitchell is zoned for Atlanta Public Schools. Kids can attend Morris Brandon Elementary School, which has a primary center for kindergarten through second grade located in the neighborhood. Its main campus for third grade through fifth grade is about 2 miles away. Westminster Schools is on the neighborhood’s north side and is widely considered one of the best private schools in the city. “If you ask most parents where they would dream for their kids to go, it’s probably that school,” Gray says. The school is known for its:
Athletics program, which has earned the most state championship titles in Georgia
Wide range of extracurriculars, which include robotics and policy debate
Rigorous academics, with over 20 Advanced Placement classes
Premier facilities, with a central quad, historic buildings and a nature trail on its 180-acre campus
How traffic impacts commutes and driving around the neighborhood
Interstate 75 runs along the neighborhood’s east side and offers a direct route to Downtown Atlanta and Midtown Atlanta, both less than 10 miles away. Getting to either place can take between 10 and 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Outside of the highway, traffic also backs up in the neighborhood when Westminster Schools start and end on school days. “Nearly 2,000 kids go there, so with everybody's parents driving around, you’ll definitely notice more backup the closer you get to the school,” Gray says.
Where to grocery shop and go out to eat
The intersection of West Paces Ferry Road and U.S. Route 41 is a major commercial hub just north of Margaret Mitchell. You’ll find major grocery stores like Whole Foods and Publix, along with fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks. The area also has a wide variety of locally owned restaurants. “There are some shockingly upscale and unique places considering it’s basically a strip mall hub,” Gray says. Popular restaurants include:
Blue Ridge Grill, a mountain lodge-inspired spot with a seasonal menu
OK Café, a 1950s-style diner serving Southern classics
Little Rey, a small bungalow where you can get tacos and margaritas
The neighborhood is about 4 miles from Buckhead Triangle, a downtown district with more restaurants, several grocery stores and the high-end Buckhead Village shopping center.
Residents can get grocery needs at the nearby Whole Foods.

Where residents go for outdoor and indoor recreation nearby
Atlanta Memorial Park, one of the city’s largest green spaces, is less than 3 miles southeast of the neighborhood. Once you’re there, you can play golf on the 18-hole public course that winds past a stream and offers views of downtown Atlanta’s skyline. The park is also home to the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center, where you can take lessons and join competitive leagues. For some indoor recreation, the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA at Buckhead is just east of the neighborhood, and members can run on the track, swim in the lap-lane pool and take group fitness classes. Other major Buckhead green spaces like Chastain Park and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area are about 5 miles away.
