The Riverside community of Atlanta
When the first 26 lots were sold in the Riverside neighborhood in 1892, the report in the local paper says it all: “Atlanta is going to be a city by the river someday.” That original vision came true 13 decades later with over 2,000 residents living large alongside the Chattahoochee River. With various housing options, local parks and a simple commute to some of the top-rated schools in the area, Riverside was rated the best neighborhood to buy a house in Atlanta and earned an A-plus on Niche. “For the longest time, our area really was more industrial. Now, it’s becoming more of a place that people call home,” neighborhood association president Lindsey Walker Hillis says. “I think we’ve done a good job making it an active neighborhood where you want to raise a family.”
A variety of architectural styles and amenities
The neighborhood features a variety of architectural styles ranging from traditional and ranch-style homes to newer contemporary and craftsman homes. Two-to-four-bedroom homes with quarter-acre lots range in the $200,000 to $400,000 price range, while 2,000-square-foot homes with decks, high ceilings and double-vanity closets sell between $400,000 and $600,000. Homes with four to five bedrooms and open-concept living areas are between $600,000 and $750,000, and new construction on the east end ranges between $800,000 and $950,000. “A few years ago, it was a really affordable neighborhood,” Hillis says. “It’s gone up drastically in price in the past few years.”
Public and charter education in Westside Atlanta
Bolton Academy is less than 2 miles east of the neighborhood and has a B-plus on Niche with a Gifted and Learning Program and a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1. Sutton Middle has an International Baccalaureate program and earned a B-plus. North Atlanta High School is rated amongst the top 10 best schools for the arts in Georgia and earned an A rating. Westside Atlanta Charter School recently celebrated 10 years in the community and earned a B rating on Niche.
Riverside parks and playgrounds
Riverside families have two parks they can take their children to around the neighborhood. Spink-Collins Park sits on the east end and features a shaded playground and public workout stations, while the 22-acre Whittier Mill Park is located along the train tracks to the west and highlights a bocce court and biking trails. A new park is also being built on the north side by Paul Avenue. “Some people call it ‘The Riverside Park,” Hillis says. “We’re working on a pavilion right now and will have a playground shortly.”
Country-style cooking and local grocery stores
Residents have the benefit of a few local restaurants within the neighborhood. Public House 28 is the local pub and eatery that serves brunch and southwestern delights such as burgers and hickory chicken sandwiches, while Country Style is a local Jamaican restaurant that serves jerk ribs, sweet chili chicken and curry goat. Bellwood Coffee started as a pop-up cart in 2019 and has since expanded into a full-fledged coffee and cocktail bar. The community also has plenty of local grocery options within the neighborhood, including Family Corner Market, Busy Bee Grocery and Frazie’s Meat & Market.
Public transportation through Hollywood Road
There are multiple bus stops along Bolton Road as part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s Hollywood Road route. Depending on whether passengers stop 6 miles south at West Lake Station or 9 miles south at the West End Station, they’ll have access to the blue and red rail lines that run throughout downtown Atlanta. The 24-hour Piedmont emergency center is 7 miles east, while the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is 18 miles south.
Riverside runs and cocktail parties
The neighborhood association keeps residents busy through many community events held throughout the year. The progressive cocktail party takes place in the spring and offers fresh beverages such as strawberry margaritas and champagne cocktails, while Riverside Runs is a pet-friendly 5K that hosts a live block party with food and games immediately after the race. In the summer, the neighborhood is organizing its first-ever bar crawl that takes residents through some of Westside Atlanta’s most popular beers.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
