From Civil Rights to City Council meetings
Once home to Civil Rights leader and U.S. Congressman John Lewis and baseball homerun king Henry Aaron, Southwest Atlanta is rich in history that lives on through enthusiastic community spirit and engagement. This region offers idyllic residential streets, access to the MARTA, and lots of local flavor.“Southwest Atlanta is historically known for its well-to-do, up and coming African-American neighborhoods, especially back in the 1970s and 80s,” said Salondia Aveni, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs at the Southwest Arts Center. “It’s really known for family and community.”

“There’s a lot of community pride”
The community spirit comes alive at the events held throughout the area. The Southwest Arts Center also operates the Wolf Creek Amphitheater and puts on regular performances and concerts. The yearly Juneteenth celebration attracts residents from all parts of Atlanta and is one of the most popular events put on by the city. There are also seasonal events like a Halloween Trunk or Treat and the Red Oak Art Festival in the fall. But Aveni says that one of the local pastimes is to come out to the local government meetings. “There’s a lot of community pride,” she says. “The citizens really participate in local government, and they’ll tell you when they like something, or when they don’t.”The CAP index ratings suggest that, with a homicide score of 8 compared to the national average of 4, Southwest Atlanta has challenges; however, Aveni is quick to refute the idea that the neighborhood is unsafe. “It’s mostly quiet, residential areas. People may think there’s a lot of crime because of the news reports, but it’s really not. It’s a great place to live, and it’s pretty safe.”

Southern comfort on a plate
Food is a love language in communities like Southwest Atlanta, and locally-owned restaurants dish up plenty to go around. The Beautiful Restaurant is a local institution that’s been around since 1979. Known as the “Healthy Soulful Taste of the South,” the cafeteria-style eatery features white tables and red and white booths on each side of the restaurant, as well as a patio for temperate days. Baltimore Crab and Seafood dishes up crab cakes alongside craft cocktails. And of course, Chick-Fil-A is always popular. Residents hit up Camp Creek Marketplace for essential shopping trips at Target, Lowe’s, and Publix Supermarket. To shop local, residents can grab a cart at Wayfield Supermarkets at the West Ridge Shopping Center.

Picnics at The Canyon
When residents need a retreat from the city, they head to Cascade Springs Nature Preserve, a 120 acre green space with a vast network of hiking trails, including a popular hike that leads to a rocky waterfall. The 32-acre Adams Park features a picnic and garden space known to the locals as “The Canyon” for its sculpted space that provides privacy at the base of a 84-foot stone stairway and walkway that carves through the hillside. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, the park has been around since the 1930s. Playgrounds, walking trails, and baseball fields provide ample recreation opportunities.

Interstates and MARTA make commuting simple
With close proximity to Interstates 20 and 285, bus stops, and MARTA statins throughout the community, Southwest Georgia residents can easily get to downtown Atlanta. I-20 runs east to west across Georgia, while I-285 is an auxiliary highway that encircles Atlanta and can help shoot residents downtown. Residents can catch the red and gold MARTA trains at the Oakland City Station or head in on the blue line at Hamilton E. Holmes stop. Southwest Atlanta Hospital is located within the neighborhood, with origins tracing back to the Catholic Colored Clinic opened in 1943 to address the lack of medical care serving the region.
Hamilton E. Holmes Station has large surface parking lots with over 1,400 free daily parking spaces.
