Open spaces and watching rockets in Atlantic

Those living in Atlantic are surrounded by open fields, which creates a peaceful, rural community. “You get the benefits of more privacy, and you’ll likely have more acreage on your property,” says Benjamin Clark, a Realtor with Dockside Properties who frequently sells in the area. “But you’re not going to deal with college kids on their scooters like you would in Chincoteague Island.” Still, the island and its amenities are just a short drive away. Residents also benefit from being close to Route 13 and a NASA facility where they can watch rockets launching.

A variety of housing styles and land for sale

Properties tend to sit in pockets surrounded by large pieces of undeveloped land. Further out from Atlantic Road, homes are typically more spread out with larger lots. There are a few waterfront properties along the bay that Clark says are in high demand when they go on the market. Housing in Atlantic varies from Victorian-style homes from the early 1900s to brand new construction. Houses start at $70,000 and go up to $680,000. There is more land for sale than homes, with lots ranging from nearly $30,000 to almost $666,000.

Both schools are in Oak Hall. “In a lot of the county, you’re going to be doing a little bit of driving to get to the schools,” Clark says.

Visiting Chincoteague and seeing the ponies swim

There are no parks in Atlantic. “Families will either go to Chincoteague or go to one of the local schools,” Clark says. The community is about 10 miles from Chincoteague, which is home to a national wildlife refuge, several smaller fishing ponds and the Assateague Lighthouse. Every year, the island celebrates the ponies swimming across the Assateague Channel. “As far as what this area is famous for, most of the stuff is going to draw you to Chincoteague,” Clark says. “All the smaller communities in Accomack County really benefit from the Chincoteague Pony Swim and Assateague Island.”

It’s free to view the exhibits and events at the Wallops Visitor Center and watch the rocket launches. “You’re definitely going to have some nice spots to check out the rockets,” Clark says. “There are some small spots in Atlantic where you really only know to go there if you’re a local and they’ve got the best views.”
