A low-key suburb near community resources in central Maine
Uptown New Auburn’s wooded nature preserves and quiet streets of New England homes give it the vibe of a small Maine town, though it’s only 2 miles south of downtown Auburn. The access to public services and a peaceful atmosphere is what attracts buyers to the neighborhood, says David Lyon, a Realtor with The Real Estate Store. “I’ve lived in 46 of the 50 states, but I chose to settle here because there’s such a good mix of outdoor recreation and community,” he says. “Since it’s a small city, both fire and police departments are full-time and responsive.” Unlike in the small, rural towns across Androscoggin County, residents of Uptown New Auburn are less than 5 miles from hospitals, shopping centers and popular restaurants, but they still enjoy a nature-oriented lifestyle.

Riverside recreation in Uptown New Auburn
Forested nature preserves encourage locals to spend time outside. The Sherwood Forest Conservation Area has a 2-mile trail network that winds through the pine trees, where joggers run with pets and snowshoers explore frosty trees in the winter. Just south of the neighborhood, discs spin through the air at the wooded Campbell Highlands Disc Golf Course, which costs $10 to play all day. The renovated Anniversary Park is about a mile north, along the Little Androscoggin River. Locals may take picnics to the landscaped grounds, browse vendors at the seasonal markets held at the park or launch a kayak into the river at the hand-carry boat launch.

A modern building for Edward Little High School
Kids may attend Sherwood Heights Elementary School from kindergarten through sixth grade and progress to Auburn Middle School. Both schools have C ratings from Niche. Older students can advance to Edward Little High School, which scores a C-plus. The high school moved to a new building for the 2023 school year, replacing the old high school from the early 1960s. The high school partners with the Lewiston Regional Technical Center to host hands-on vocational courses in its new learning spaces, which include a kitchen for the culinary arts program and a hair salon for cosmetology students.
Long-time eateries in New Auburn Center
There aren’t many businesses in this neighborhood, aside from a couple of industrial supply stores on Riverside Drive. Locals drive about a mile north to grab a bite at popular eateries. There are Styrofoam containers of lobster rolls and clams from Always Fresh La Rochelle’s, a casual seafood shack. Rolly’s Diner and Happy Days Diner are both old-fashioned breakfast spots that serve hearty breakfast platters. More elevated restaurants are a few miles north, around the Auburn Mall; Wei Li is an American Chinese restaurant where diners order fried rice and sesame chicken in a comfortable dining room. Stores such as Target, Hobby Lobby and Lowe’s are also near the Auburn Mall. Residents grab groceries from Hannaford and Shaw’s, which are both less than 4 miles north of Uptown New Auburn. “We even have a natural food store called Axis, which is uncommon to find in a small Maine city,” Lyon says. Axis Natural Foods stocks organic packaged goods and essential oils.

Interstate 95 connects commuters to Portland and Augusta
Citylink, Auburn and Lewiston’s public transportation service operates a couple of bus stops along South Main Street, but most rely on cars to get around. Drivers follow Main Street to get to downtown Auburn, where they can cross the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge over the Androscoggin River to arrive in downtown Lewiston, less than a mile from Uptown New Auburn. Commuters headed to Portland link with Interstate 95 to drive 40 miles south; the state capital of Augusta is a 35-mile drive northeast on the same route. While Auburn has a municipal airport, the nearest option with commercial flights is the Portland International Jetport. Residents don’t have to travel far for medical resources, however. “People will relocate to the area because we have two hospitals just across the river in Lewiston: Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s Health System,” Lyon says.
