Audubon Park is a close-knit Louisville area community that takes pride in its natural setting. Officially a Tree City USA community, Audubon Park thrives on having a mature canopy that includes dogwoods, oaks, maples, hornbeams, yellowwoods and chestnuts. Many homeowners each spring will put down mulch and shine spotlights on their dogwoods and flowers as part of a decades old tradition. Frequent visitors who enjoy taking advantage of the canopy include the Louisville mounted patrol. This scenery combines with historic neighborhood structures to give this small city much of its appeal. Helping with these factors is proximity to institutions like the St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church, the Northern Audubon Hospital, the Highland Festival Grounds and the highly rated Audubon Country Club. “A lot of people will move here because they can walk up to the country club during the summer. It’s a huge draw for people to live here,” says Audubon Park Mayor Madeline Bozeman. The community even has its own police department, which has helped with its draw over the years. “We have residents who grow up here and they leave to go to college for various reasons, then get married and come back to raise their family here,” Bozeman says.

Honoring decades old tradition through Festival of the Dogwood
Audubon Park’s most defining community event is its Festival of the Dogwood in April, which celebrates the neighborhood’s most significant tree. The festival itself is just over five decades old, but is rooted in an even older tradition that began during World War II when residents would plant dogwoods in their yards in honor of family members serving in the armed forces. Goers to the festival today can now enjoy food trucks and entertainment like live music and a petting zoo that can include turkeys, miniature horses and baby chicks for children to pick up. After the festival wraps up, residents usually continue to light their dogwoods for about another two weeks. “Everyone in the community gets a spotlight and lights up their dogwood and blooming flowers,” Bozeman says. “It’s a really nice way to still honor our tradition.” Another major event is the community’s July 4 parade.
Rounds on the highly rated Audubon Country Club
The community sits right along the edge of the private Audubon Country Club. In addition to the 18-hole course that is rated among the best in Kentucky, members can enjoy several amenities that include a pool with a low and high dive, tennis courts, a fitness center with machines and free weights and dining at the clubhouse. There are also several small parks or green spaces within the community where residents can enjoy casual strolls in the shade of Audubon Park’s many trees. More outdoor activities can be enjoyed just east of the community at the Louisville Nature Center, where visitors can take the natural trails to explore the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve, a 41-acre urban forest. Children can enjoy additional activities like looking at live turtles or hopping on a group of tree stumps. The Louisville Zoo sits just south of the nature center and boasts popular sites like its Giraffe House and lion exhibit.

Charming pockets with Cape Cods, Colonials and bungalows
Typical days can see residents taking strolls along narrow and peaceful neighborhood roads. During the fall, Audubon Park exudes seasonal charm as brown leaves are strewn across much of the spacious front yards. One picturesque pocket is the area of Cross Bill Road and Audubon Parkway, the two of which are separated by a grassy and tree-shaded park median. A garden bed and bench occupy the end of the median facing Chickadee Road, while a tire swing hangs off one of the nearby trees’ branches. Many of the homes are close to a century old and feature traits like red brick and stone exteriors. Common styles in Audubon Park include Craftsman bungalows, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals, and some of those feature Dutch Colonial and Tudor stylistic touches. Much of the price points can go from just under $350,000 to nearly $450,000, with Colonials and larger Cape Cods found on the upper half of that range. A two-bedroom condo unit at the luxurious Audubon Woods Community can go for just over $350,000.

Pies and brews at Craft House Pizza
Dining and shopping options exist both west and east of Audubon Park. Craft House Pizza on Preston Highway is tough to miss. It’s a popular community destination for pies and brews, and Patrons can also take to the outdoor seating right along the roadway. Those looking for a dive bar and late night hangout spot can walk across Morgan Avenue to The Deuce, which has a saloon style entrance. If they feel up to it, patrons can take to the stage with their friends for some karaoke. An ALDI farther up Preston Highway offers a grocery shopping option. Then, several chain restaurants exist at the Village of Audubon shopping center right off Poplar Level Road.
Gifted students program at St. Stephen
Public schools in or close to the community include Audubon Traditional Elementary School, Highland Middle School and Atherton High School, which respectfully received grades of B-minus, C and A-minus from ratings site Niche. The community church has an affiliated academy, the St. Stephen Martyr Catholic School, which serves students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. The school takes part in gifted student initiatives with Indiana University Southeast, Johns Hopkins University and Duke University.
Louisville International Airport in its backyard
Audubon Park lies just north of the Louisville International Airport. The community is also located just off Interstate 65, which provides a direct commuter route north to downtown Louisville and the communities in southern Indiana. The North Audubon Hospital and UofL Health - Peace Hospital, respectfully, lie just north and east of the neighborhood’s bounds.
