Highland Park
Walking the High Line and hitting the green
“Almost everyone who lives here has a dog, so one of the biggest draws is access to walking and biking paths,” says Jason Morris, eXp Realty Realtor and Aurora local. “The planners have done a really good job with bike and walking paths.” Residents of Highland Park have direct access to one of the longest routes in the region: the High Line Canal Trail, which stretches 71 miles from Aurora to Roxborough State Park. Just north of the High Line Canal Trail is Del Mar Park’s semicircle layout offers space for playtime, tennis, basketball and swimming. Boasting corkscrew slides, a splash zone, two diving boards and multiple shaded picnic areas, the Del Mar Family Aquatic Center may as well be a water park. Morris states that the park is what stands out about the neighborhood, as the green space “gets used quite heavily” by locals. Highline Park and Ballfields is a popular spot for baseball, and kids can run around a colorful playground spotted with insect imagery. Golfers are in luck at Highland Park, as the neighborhood is within 1 mile of two beloved public golf courses. To the east is Aurora Hills Golf Course, which opened in 1969 as the city’s first municipal course. To the west is CommonGround Golf Course, which offers stunning views of the Front Range.Streets with shade trees line Highland Park
Along the streets of Highland Park is a collection of L-shaped brick ranches, midcentury two-stories and town houses. Front yards dotted with trees offer summer shade, and most trees are mature enough to support rope swings. The streets are wide enough to accommodate two-way traffic and parked cars, but this does result in more narrow sidewalks that lack a parking strip buffer from the road. Most homes include a driveway and a garage, though, so street parking is not a necessity. Morris notes that the housing market in Highland Park is quite similar to that of neighboring Sunny Vale, as both are slightly older neighborhoods caught up in the redevelopment of Lowry Air Force Base. Most homes sell between $400,000 and $600,000, which is lower than Aurora’s average and significantly cheaper than the city of Denver. However, town house listings cost even less at around $350,000.Lansing Elementary serves deaf and hard-of-hearing students
Students living in Highland Park can walk to Lansing Elementary School, one of the only Aurora schools to offer a program for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Older students will then attend Aurora Hills Middle School, where they can spend one full day each week focusing on exploratory courses like design and modeling, app creation and entrepreneurship. Both schools earn a C-minus rating on Niche. When students transition to Aurora Central High School in ninth grade, they can take their occupational exploration to the next level by participating in a career pathways program. The school earns a score of C from Niche.Sweet doughnuts and savory pupusas
Locals don’t have to go far to fill their fridges; Morris says that while “Hoffman Heights Shopping Center is a little older, more locals use it” instead of bigger shopping areas. Shoppers can grab groceries at King Soopers and then indulge in a sweet treat from City Donuts, a family-owned institution that’s been around for over 50 years. For lunch, people head to Pupusas La Salvadoreña for a home-cooked Salvadoran meal. This unassuming spot might seem small, but the flavors are big: diners can choose from over 10 different pupusa fillings that are filled with seasoning. The strip mall also features a variety of shops, from beauty suppliers to bargain stores. For more retail options, locals visit Town Center at Aurora, a large indoor shopping mall less than 3 miles away. The mall houses over 150 retailers, restaurants and a Cinemark Century movie theater.Getting around Highland Park
Most residents use cars to get around the city. Colorado State Route 30 creates the area’s northern border and intersects with Interstate 225 2 miles east. Regional Transportation District bus stops can also be found around the neighborhood’s perimeter. For long-distance travel, the neighborhood is just 14 miles from Denver International Airport. In the event of an emergency, locals are within 3 miles of UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, a fire rescue station, and the Aurora Police Department.
