A peaceful and private community
Privacy and serenity are readily available in Shenandoah, as the gated community’s singular entrance prevents traffic and noise from disrupting the calm atmosphere. Only 6 miles from Aurora’s City Center, Shenandoah is known for its lavish housing options and proximity to quality schools. Those living in the community benefit from the homeowner’s association’s many amenities and its dedication to a well-kept neighborhood. “I’ve lived here for 20 years, and I love it. You drive in, and it’s like you’re in a completely different place,” says Nellie Harris-Cassel, an associate broker with Worth Clark Realty who has over two decades of experience. “It’s not just a subdivision, it’s a community. People are always watching out after each other.”

Eye-catching single-family homes
The main thoroughfare, Shenandoah Way, follows a circular path and branches into cul-de-sacs with clusters of homes. Properties in the neighborhood have elaborate features and concrete driveways, ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 square feet. Large Craftsman homes with gabled roofs and luxurious ranch-style homes, usually with brick or stone features, can cost between $725,000 and $900,000. “The houses here are neat; a lot of them are custom houses. It’s not cookie-cutter where everyone has the same model,” Harris-Cassel says. There are also Tudor-inspired homes with a cottage-core aesthetic for a similar size and price. In fact, since the neighborhood was built in the 1970s, many homes have started to undergo remodeling. Most properties in the neighborhood sit on half-acre lots with lush lawns and are surrounded by mature trees that give each space a sense of privacy.

Quality schools within walking distance
One of Shenandoah’s biggest draws is the availability of quality schools within the Cherry Creek School District. First, young children can attend Sagebrush Elementary School with its B-minus grade from Niche. Starting in sixth grade, students can walk along a protected sidewalk from Shenandoah to Laredo Middle School, which maintains a B-plus Niche grade and offers classes for English Language Learners. Smoky Hill High School is next door and earns an A-minus Niche grade. Ranked No. 8 in Best Public High Schools in Arapahoe County by Niche, Smoky Hill offers an International Baccalaureate (IB) program, career-specific classes and over 50 student clubs and activities.

Community amenities and nearby recreation
Shenandoah’s Homeowner’s Association provides multiple recreational amenities that keep the community active. In addition to its clubhouse and outdoor pool, the association has tennis and pickleball courts and a playground for little ones to explore. “The kids are always playing out in the street, walking to each other’s houses and going to the neighborhood park together. You don’t see that everywhere,” Harris-Cassel says. While Shenandoah itself lacks a traditional public park, there are several in nearby neighborhoods, including Kellispell Park and Wagon Tail Park, that have jungle gyms and recreational fields. Those craving a little more adventure can travel roughly 4 miles southwest to Cherry Creek State Park. The 4,000-acre natural prairie land is vast, including campgrounds, facilities and trails for hiking and mountain biking, plus an off-leash dog park. Additionally, a large reservoir in the park provides fishing, boating and kayaking opportunities.

Getting the community together
In addition to regular meet-and-greets, Shenandoah residents can spend time together at various events that the community clubhouse hosts. “Every Friday night, they have a happy hour where people can come and get a drink and unwind,” Harris-Cassel says. The association will also put on annual events for the holidays, such as a Fourth of July parade and a Christmas party.
Nearby shops and restaurants in Aurora
With multiple commercial areas lining Smokey Hill Road, shopping and dining opportunities are right within reach for Shenandoah residents. Piney Creek Crossing shopping center is just past the neighborhood schools, with its directory of small businesses and fast-casual eateries. Chago’s Mexican Food serves traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes, while Toley’s on the Creek is a classic American bar and grill. The area also has a Walmart Neighborhood Market . On the neighborhood's western side, the Shenandoah Shopping Center has its own locally owned restaurants. The Angry Clover is an Irish pub that has a dance floor and karaoke for nighttime entertainment. There’s also Coloradough Pizza, with its signature region-inspired pies.

A walkable area in a centralized location
As a gated community, Shenandoah is closed off from the main road, preventing through traffic and promoting a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. “People are walking constantly, and stopping in the street to talk to each other,” Harris-Cassel says. When traveling outside of Shenandoah, most people rely on their own vehicles. Colorado State Highway 83 is roughly 2 miles from the neighborhood, which can connect commuters to Interstate 225 in the north for access to Aurora’s City Center. Those who rely on public transportation can find bus stops along South Chambers Road and East Smoky Hill Road. Centennial Airport offers charter flights only 7 miles away, though traveling to the Denver International Airport is required for a commercial flight.
Shenandoah is in Arapahoe County and is one of the best places to live in Colorado.
Shenandoah is a tight-knit community, and a great place to call home.
