North River
Eclectic homes from the 1910s to the 2000s
Homes sit on precise city blocks on North River’s southeast side facing the center of Aurora, but roads are wide enough that traffic doesn’t have to squeeze between cars parked along the curbs. Roads have a more suburban character along the west and north ends, with gentle curves, crescent-style roads and a few cul-de-sacs. “There’s some more variance of houses close to downtown, but they normalize the further out you go,” says Jacqueline Dix, a real estate broker with Compass. Buyers can find a mix of homes built over the course of the 20th century here, including Craftsman bungalows from the 1910s and 1920s, 1950s and 1960s ranch-style homes and 1960s and 1970s townhomes. A few new traditional properties from the 1990s and 2000s connect the area to the new millennium. Single-family properties in the area with two- to three-bedroom floorplans range from about $155,000 to $252,000, while larger three- and four-bedroom homes range from $255,000 to $344,000. Townhomes and rare duplex units generally sell between $200,000 and $225,000. Some properties may have higher flood risks, according to the First Street Foundation’s Risk Factor index.Mexican fare, diner favorites and casual Greek-American eats
“It’s a diverse city. There is a large Hispanic community, and the businesses and restaurants make everyone feel welcome,” says Rafael Martinez, a resident and the Facilities Director for the Fox Valley Park District. Primos Mexican Cuisine offers a menu of street tacos and traditional entrees in a casual dining space with neon signs and wall art. Nikarry’s is a local go-to for comfort food, offering a classic country diner vibe for breakfast and lunch. Menus printed with line drawings of burgers, pancakes and salads have the restaurant’s motto front and center: “If you like our food, tell others. If not, tell us.” Baba’s Famous Steak & Lemonade specializes in Greek-American fare, with a broad menu including burgers, Philly sandwiches and Italian beef. For fast food and casual fare, residents can also find familiar brands such as McDonald’s, Starbucks and White Castle situated along Lake Street. Most of North River’s shopping options are concentrated on the east side of the neighborhood near Lake Street. Cermak Fresh Market is a close pick to stock the pantry, offering traditional grocery fare alongside international items. Thrift and Dollar specializes in antiques, vintage clothing and used media. For projects around the home, Harbor Freight Tools and Ace Hardware are both available at the Northgate Shopping Center. And for birthdays and seasonal celebrations, Dulcelandia has piñatas, Mexican candy, wall décor and other party supplies. Other well-known retailers nearby include Ross, Dollar General and Five Below.
Farmers’ markets, movie nights and Fourth of July fireworks
El Capitan Restaurant offers a rotating selection of local Latin musicians and DJs, as well as drink specials and seafood platters. Moviegoers can catch the latest releases at the Cinemark Tinseltown USA Aurora cinema on the neighborhood’s northeast side. South of the neighborhood in downtown Aurora, the Farmers Market runs from June into late August. Vendors with local berries, shrubs and spices sit alongside food trucks with ready-made meals and artisans with home décor. The city’s annual Independence Day Fireworks show is also hosted along the river at McCullough Park and RiverEdge Park, with food vendors, kids’ entertainment and a live DJ at previous events.Waterfront dog parks and community center fitness
At New Haven Park, residents can get moving with the open fields, walking trails or two ball diamonds. The park also has a playground and gazebo for picnics. To the east on the Fox River, Gregory Island Dog Park has open areas and shoreline access; pet owners are required to register with the local Fox Valley Park District for entry. McCullough Park is another choice for days out along the river, with access to the Fox River Trail, soccer fields and the Prisco Community Center. Locals can visit the center for the indoor basketball court, youth sports programs, the Fox Fitness exercise gym and more.Music, arts and more at West Aurora schools
