Aurora's quiet suburb nestled between two parks
Southeast Aurora is a suburban sector of the small city, nestled between the Fox River and Philips Park. While the neighborhood is residential, the proximity to these parks means residents are just a short walk or drive from outdoor spaces and events. Whether commuting into downtown Chicago or spending a day outside, Southeast Aurora’s quiet streets provide a space where residents can unwind and settle in. “I was born and raised in Aurora, and what I appreciate about this neighborhood and the city is the diversity. Everywhere you turn, you see a familiar face,” says recreation supervisor Rafael Martinez with Fox Valey Park District. “Everyone is welcoming, from residents to business owners.”
The Philips Park Zoo and walking along Fox River
People living on the western side of the community are just minutes away from one of Aurora’s best parks—Philips Park. The Mastodon Trail spans 1 mile around Mastodon Lake, where people can stop to fish or launch kayaks and canoes. In the summer, the Philips Park Family Aquatic Center is where families go to cool off in the pool or play in the sand. Golf enthusiasts can practice their swing at the golf course here. The park is even home to a skate park, with equipment designed for all experience levels. The Philips Park Zoo is free to visitors and features elk, wolves and cougars. On the opposite side of the community, Fox River Trail stretches along Southeast Aurora, offering hiking, biking and cross-country skiing opportunities in the winter. For a night out, people head to Aurora Skate Center, the city’s roller rink.
Streets lined with bungalows and farmhouses
When strolling down Southeast Aurora’s sidewalks, people will see a mix of bungalows and traditional farmhouses with front porches. Young trees line the streets, while the occasional older trees shade the homes and sidewalks. Telephone wires rise above the homes, with poles situated between houses. Most lawns are open, with a small patch of grass and a walkway up to the front stoop or porches. The open feel of yards and streets adds to the suburban feel of the neighborhood despite being so close to Aurora’s city center. Homes here price between $150,000 and $300,000.
Aurora's downtown and park festivals
Because of Southeast Aurora’s proximity to downtown and Philips Park, residents have their choice of Aurora’s events and festivals. Right at Philips Park, the Aurora Festival of Lights is how the city celebrates the winter holidays. The park sets up displays featuring ice skaters, gingerbread houses and elves along a 1-mile strip that people can drive along, all while tuned into a closed-circuit radio station playing holiday songs. Each May, downtown Aurora kicks off the summer season with the Food Truck Fest, showcasing over 30 food trucks, followed by a party with live music. Another Christmas favorite is The Christmaskindlmarket, where visitors peruse the German-style Christmas market adorned with string lights and holly while snacking on pretzels, bratwursts and spiced wine.
Southeast Aurora's Mexican restaurants and Irish pub
Even though Southeast Aurora is more residential, residents can still find local restaurants close to home. On the side closer to the river, La Quebrada Restaurant has served the community for 25 years, always making their tortillas by hand daily. Over the Philips Park Golf Course, O’Malley’s Pub and Eatery is known as the Irish gem of Aurora and offers live entertainment and team trivia nights throughout the week. When craving pizza, people head to Garios Pizza Villa for classic pies. For groceries, Ashland Plaza on the southern side has Food Market La Chiquita, a supermarket specializing in Mexican goods. Further south in Oswego, the shopping center off Walter Payton Memorial Highway has a Walmart, Aldi, Target and Meijer, all within 3 miles of Southeast Aurora.
AP classes at East Aurora High School
Students begin at R.E. Krug Elementary School for grades kindergarten through fifth before continuing on to K.D. Waldo Middle School. Niche gives both schools C-minus rankings. At East Aurora High School, students can enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) courses to potentially earn college credit. The school receives a C from Niche.
Workers commute to Chicago from Aurora
Aurora’s city center is just 2.4 miles from Southeast Aurora, accessible along East River Road. To find the grocery stores and shopping centers, people just have to drive south along Walter Payton Memorial Highway. This motorway also takes people to the nearest medical center, Copley Memorial Hospital, just 3 miles away on the other side of Philips Park. Even though Aurora is 42 miles from downtown Chicago, many people still commute into the city for work, taking I-290 and I-88, but there's also a Metrarail station in Aurora that connects to Chicago. When traveling beyond Aurora and Chicago, Chicago Midway International Airport is just 40 miles away, accessible along I-55.
