Celebrating Mexican American culture and history

Restaurants and bars up and down East Sixth Street offer fun fusions like the Texas brisket bento with miso barbecue sauce at Kemuri Tatsu-ya and unique spaces like Central Machine Works Brewery, a machinery building renovated into a microbrewery and beer hall. The neighborhood also has a vibrant arts scene with murals and street art that pay homage to the area’s rich Mexican American culture and history. Galleries like Women & Their Work and Canvas ATX line East Cesar Chavez Street. Nearby is the Rainey Street Historic District, a lively alternative to the nightlife scene, it’s made up of former residences that have been converted to backyard pubs and eateries. Drawing crowds across Austin and beyond

Festival Beach on Lady Bird Lake is the site of numerous events throughout the year that draw crowds across Austin and beyond, including Austin Pride and South by Southwest. The Historic Scoot Inn hosts everything from concerts to local pop-up markets, while The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center is known for events and programs dedicated to preserving the city’s Latino and Mexican American heritage. Among the center’s most popular events is the annual Día de los Muertos Festival.

East Cesar Chavez retains much of its original character, even as the neighborhood constantly evolves and incorporates new architectural styles. Homes range from petite bungalows to modern lofts. “East Cesar Chavez has been a popular area for developers to build custom homes in recent years,” Gomillion says. “You can also find historic homes, both renovated and unrenovated.” Condos and apartments are also available throughout the neighborhood. A 1-bedroom condo will go for $300,000 to $400,000 while a 2-bedroom bungalow typically won’t be priced under $600,000. A renovated or newly built home can sell for over $1,000,000.

Growing and foraging for veggies at Festival Beach

The Edward Rendon Sr. Metro Park at Festival Beach, known to locals as “Chicano Park,” is a stretch of green space along the shores of Lady Bird Lake. The park offers scenic views of downtown, a playscape and lots of open field space for a picnic spread or a pickup game. The park is also home to the waterfront Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail and the Fiesta Gardens event space. East Cesar Chavez residents can grow fresh veggies in a plot at the Festival Beach Community Garden or even forage for fresh produce at the Festival Beach Food Forest.

Many different ways to get to work

Residents who work downtown can walk or bike to the office via the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail for a peaceful commute along the banks of the Colorado River. Just a few miles from Downtown Austin, traveling into the city by car is relatively quick and convenient. When traveling to other city areas, Interstate 35 borders the neighborhood, connecting residents to all major roadways. Austin’s public transit network is also accessible — the Plaza Saltillo MetroRail station connects to nearly every part of the city.

A renovated elementary school preserving the past

Schools in the East Cesar Chavez neighborhood include Sanchez Elementary, which was recently renovated but carefully preserved the original campus’s elaborate mural by renowned artist Raul Valdez. Students can then move on to Martin Middle and Eastside Easy College High. All schools receive a C to C-plus rating on Niche.
