Historic roots meet modern living and nearby jobs in McNeil

McNeil is a melting pot of eras and conveniences, within one pocket of north Austin. You’ll find a functioning post office that’s been open since 1888 just a couple of miles from a 21st-century condo complex. A centrally located office park accommodates close-by jobs, down the road from a highly rated high school. The assortment of restaurants just outside McNeil can satiate seemingly every taste, while the neighboring MoPac Expressway can transport you to even more attractions.

What kinds of homes and prices you’ll find in this area

This area sprouted in the late 19th century at the intersection of the International and Great Northern and Austin and Northwestern railroads, and was named for rail foreman George McNeil. The oldest existing homes here today date to the 1970s, including ranch-style properties in the Northwood subdivision. The Preston Oaks development adds some two-story New Traditional options to the mix, and Ashton Woods has condos built in the 2000s. Houses around McNeil share similar, quiet residential blocks and many of them have sidewalks, greasing connections between neighbors. “The area has a social and helpful atmosphere,” says Donna Andruk, who’s the team lead and operations coordinator at the Andruk Realty Team with Keller Williams, and has sold homes in the Austin area for over a decade. “They have an active Facebook group and weekend events like the Rattan Creek Crawfish boil.”

Most single-family homes in McNeil sell for prices from the mid-$300,000s to the upper $600,000s. The condos in Ashton Woods range from the mid-$300,000s to the lower $400,0000s, with HOA fees between $400 and $500. “Over the years, property values in this neighborhood have shown a positive trend,” Andruk says.

McNeil’s railroad roots live on through the Howard stop here in the city’s CapMetro commuter rail network.
