Luxury resort-living meets the outdoors in Beaver Creek
Beaver Creek is a renowned ski resort and mountain town in Vail Valley. Seasonal and full-time residents alike can enjoy the resort's abundant outdoor recreation, plus mountains of shopping and dining. “The town itself is pretty small, so the resort area is very welcoming,” says Realtor Haley Dyer with Corcoran Perry & Co., who has almost 10 years of experience in real estate. “Everyone is really driven with hospitality, so even though folks only come for a short time, they feel like they’re coming home.”
World-class skiing and outdoor recreation on the mountain
Beaver Creek Resort is a mecca for outdoor adventure. The 2,000 acres of skiable terrain includes over 165 ski trails and 24 lifts, plus three terrain parks: Haymeadow Park, a designated learning area with gentle terrain; Red Buffalo Park for beginners and intermediate skiers; and McCoy Park for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There’s also the Beaver Creek Ice Rink for skating. “It’s a really engaging mountain,” Dyer says. “Beaver Creek really lends itself to being accessible to everyone, from beginner skiers to people looking for adventure.” In the summer, multiple hiking and biking trails wind through the mountain’s alpine terrain and fields of wildflowers. “The chairlifts open back up in summer and you can ride to the top of the mountain and hike or bike down,” Dyer says. At the base of the resort, Creekside Park has a playground and picnic pavilion. There are also three golf courses: 18-hole Beaver Creek Golf Club, which is open to the public, and Red Sky Golf Club, a membership-only club with two award-winning courses designed by Tom Fazio and Greg Norman.
Additional events and resort entertainment
On top of outdoor recreation, Beaver Creek Resort sometimes hosts events and festivals. The Vilar Performing Arts Center, the resort’s hotspot for evening entertainment, hosts over 150 events a year, from Broadway musicals and theater productions to dance performances, comedy routines and live music. Birds of Prey is a famous international downhill skiing race held every year at the resort, attracting thousands of enthusiasts and even Olympic athletes.
Beaver Creek’s condos, townhouses and mountain homes
Beaver Creek housing includes multifamily and single-family properties. “There’s everything from a studio condo within a hotel building, up to single-family homes that are 15,000 square feet. Even President Ford had a home up here,” Dyer says. Luxury condos are common. Some have a contemporary design, while others go for the apres-ski look of a classic mountain lodge. Most come with access to additional amenities, including pools, fitness centers and spas. “You feel like you’re living in the lap of luxury,” Dyer says. Full ownership of a condo unit can range from $1.5 million to $6.8 million, while fractional ownership can run anywhere from $30,000 to $450,000, depending on how many weeks per year are included in the shared ownership.Multistory townhouses built in the 1990s are another option, many with cabin-inspired features and stone accents. These properties cost around $2.5 million to $5.5 million. Luxury, multistory mountain homes dot the slopes, with floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies and fireplaces. Prices usually range between $4.5 million and $15.5 million, though homes over 10,000 square feet can get up to $24 million.
Shopping and eating in Beaver Creek Village
At the base of the resort, Beaver Creek Village includes multiuse developments with a ground level of shops and eateries open to the cobblestone streets as well as a top level of hotels and condos. Name-brand retailers in the village include Patagonia and Helly Hansen, plus fine-dining restaurant Splendido at the Chateau. For something more casual, Coyote Cafe is a Mexican cantina, and Dusty Boot Saloon doubles as a steakhouse and bar. Downtown Avon is roughly 3 miles from the resort with its own selection of bakeries, tap houses and casual dining. City Market is the local grocery store.
Free shuttle bus service around the resort
The ski resort offers free shuttle service to pick up residents from their homes. “In the wintertime, I encourage folks not to have a car and to use the shuttle service, because once they’re within resort lines, they can get access to anywhere,” Dyer says. A handful of regional bus services, including Avon Transit and Core Transit, also serve Eagle County. About 30 miles away, the Eagle County Regional Airport provides nonstop flights to 14 major cities, including Denver. The Denver International Airport is roughly 160 miles away by car.
Getting educated in Eagle County public schools
Beaver Creek is served by the Eagle County School District. Avon Elementary School earns a C grade from Niche, while Homestake Peak School receives a B-minus. Eagle County Charter Academy, another K-8 option, receives a B-plus. Battle Mountain High School, also rated B-plus, offers Advanced Placement courses and electives in Industry & Technology.
The unique challenges of mountain living
With a base elevation of over 8,000 feet and a summit elevation of roughly 11,500 feet, high-altitude Beaver Creek is subject to extreme weather. Average annual snowfall is 323 inches, nearly five times higher than the Colorado average. Beaver Creek itself can put the area at risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.
