Sidewalks line the quiet residential streets of Fairway Oaks, where palm trees adorn manicured front lawns. Many homes have Mediterranean influences, seen in their tiled roofs and arched entryways, and short driveways lead to two-car attached garages. With an average home price of $485,000, houses here are pricier than the average Bakersfield home. Three-bedroom homes with 1,500 to 1,800 square feet hit the market between $300,000 and $450,000. On the market’s higher end, multi-story four-bedroom homes with over 3,000 square feet are listed at $825,000. “Homebuyers are realizing that they can get a much larger property with more yard space in West Bakersfield for the same price they are paying along the L.A. Basin,” says Torres, referring to the nearby South California region. Yards are small, and homes sit close together, but fenced-in back yards provide neighbors with a degree of privacy.

Calloway Drive amenities
There are numerous chain and local eateries just north of the neighborhood on Calloway Drive, intermixed with convenient shopping centers like Brimhall Square and The Center on Calloway. At Old River Grill, the chefs serve up juicy burgers for lunch and sweet and savory dishes alike for brunch, from pancakes to steak and eggs. Kan Pai is open for dinner seven nights a week and offers high quality sushi and teppanyaki tables. After dinner, patrons can indulge with a sweet treat from Sugar Twist Bakery. When it comes to groceries and household essentials, the closest options are Grocery Outlet and Sprouts Farmers Market, which are both within a 5-minute drive of the neighborhood.

Highly rated Bakersfield public schools
Homes on the north end of Fairway Oaks are within walking distance of American Elementary School, which earns an A overall grade and is the second-best public elementary school in the Bakersfield area, according to Niche. Seventh and eighth graders can attend the A-minus-rated Rosedale Middle School. Liberty High School is just a mile west of the neighborhood and boasts an A grade. Students here have a wide range of electives to consider, including publishing, drama production, engineering design and environmental sustainability. The school is also one of the best public high schools in California for athletes, according to Niche, with numerous football state championship wins under their belt.

Easy commuting via Route 58
Calloway Drive runs north to south through town, intersecting with California State Route 58. “It’s easy for commuters to hop on these highways and get to Bakersfield to the east or Interstate 5 to the west,” Torres says.

30-mile Kern River Parkway Trail
On the southern side of the Kern River, across from Fairway Oaks is the Kern River Parkway Trail, a 30-mile path where bicyclists, walkers and equestrians can enjoy views of the Kern River. The trail passes through The Park at River Walk, home to two small fishing lakes, walking paths and picnic pavilions. The park also features the Dignity Health Amphitheatre, which hosts a spring concert series and other live music events throughout the year. Liberty Park lies just west of the neighborhood’s residential streets and features a popular playground along with facilities for soccer and basketball.
