Greenacres
A variety of housing styles on half-acre lots
Homes in Greenacres range from smaller, ranch-style builds from the midcentury to 1980s Craftsman houses to modern Mediterranean architecture built in the 2010s. Single-family homes range from $275,000 to $725,000 with newer builds on larger lots typically being on the higher end. “A lot of these houses are on almost a half-acre of land, which is much more than you’ll find closer to the city center,” says Van Denk. Most homes have modest front yards with large, fenced-in backyards sometimes featuring private pools. Driveways and multicar garages make parking easy. Flat sidewalks are shaded by California Oaks and many of the roads end in quiet cul-de-sacs. There are a few manufactured homes in the Lazy H Mobile Park gated community. These cost between $74,000 and $80,000 and feature a community pool and gated entrance.Liberty High School excels
Kids in Greenacres may attend American Elementary School, part of the Rosedale Union Elementary School District. American Elementary has an A-minus Niche grade and was named by the service as the third-best public elementary school in the Bakersfield area. Rosedale Middle School also holds an A-minus grade. Liberty High School has an A, and Niche named the school the second-best public high school in the Bakersfield area and the 28th-best high school in California for athletes. The Liberty Patriots’ football team won the state championship in 2022. “People pack the stadiums for high school football games in Bakersfield, especially if the teams are good,” says Van Denk. “We’ll get more fans on a Friday night than some colleges around here do on Saturdays and a lot of high schoolers from the area go on to play college or pro.”Fun at Greenacres Community Center
The Greenacres Community Center is located in the neighborhood and is a major hub for recreation. Locals come to cool off in the swimming pool or play pickleball. The center also features an indoor gym for fitness activities and basketball games. Bordering the southern end of the neighborhood, Liberty Park, one block south, has five soccer fields and a pair of lighted volleyball courts. Kids can play for hours in the open green areas. Movie fans can head to Studio Movie Grill, one block north of the neighborhood, to catch Hollywood’s latest releases.Dining at Sonder
Locals have sat at the leather booths of Old River Grill for healthy portions of home-style cooking since 2013. The diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner specialties like biscuits and gravy and club sandwiches. Sonder is a gastropub with dozens of beers on tap. High-end bar dishes are served on wooden platters, and diners can sit on the outdoor patio surrounded by cooling fans and string lights. Victor’s Mexican Grill serves fast, casual meals. There is no shortage of options for grocery shoppers with Albertsons and Walmart locations in the neighborhood.High temperatures in the California summer
Greenacres, like the rest of Bakersfield, deals with low air quality due to the city’s agricultural and oil industries. In addition, Greenacres experiences extreme heat in the summer with temperatures regularly rising above 100 degrees.Truxtun Avenue into downtown
The Golden Empire Transit buses offer quick transportation around the neighborhood. Commuters can take Truxtun Avenue 7 miles east to downtown Bakersfield or Calloway Drive 8 miles north to Meadows Field Airport for domestic travel.
