A 55-plus community surrounding Sundale Country Club
Founded as a 55-and-over community by famed real estate developer Del Webb in 1961, Kern City has been a popular destination four miles southwest of Bakersfield for decades. “There’s a real sense of community and pride of ownership because most of the people who move into Kern City are staying for the long haul,” says Eric Van Denk, Broker at Central Valley Property Advisors, with nearly 10 years of experience in Bakersfield. “You start to feel a real connection when you live next to the same people for 20 years.” The neighborhood is centered around Sundale Country Club, which features an 18-hole course and a luxury restaurant. “Many club members don’t live in Kern City, so locals can see fresh faces when they’re out golfing,” adds Van Denk. Residents can choose between single-family homes and condo units close to the club and the community center, which hosts frequent events.

Access to two major golf courses
Kern City is a perfect neighborhood for avid golfers. “Golf is huge all over Bakersfield, but the southwest portion of the city has the best courses,” says Esteban Contreras of Central Valley Property Advisors, who has worked in Bakersfield since 2012. Sundale Country Club sits in the middle of Kern City offering locals an 18-hole experience, a newly renovated clubhouse and a large practice facility, including practice greens and a driving range. Members can sign up for individual or group lessons or participate in one of the many tournaments put on by the club throughout the year. Three blocks west on Stockdale Highway is Stockdale Country Club. The club opened in 1935, and members can hit the links, play tennis or work out in the fitness center. Residents congregate at the Kern City Recreation Center, which hosts various social events like karaoke, quilting and senior exercise classes.

Single-family homes and condos
Most single-family homes in Kern City cost between $230,000 and $400,000 depending on number of bedrooms and lot sizes, while houses on the golf course cost between $410,000 and $525,000. “These are almost exclusively flat-level single-story houses from the early 1970s with private driveways and attached garages,” says Van Denk. “The front yards are fairly small, but some of the back yards back up to the golf course, and those can be really large, which is something to think about from a maintenance perspective.” One-bedroom condos cost between $171,000 and $185,000, while two and three-bedroom units cost from $230,000 to $360,000 depending on size and location. The neighborhood’s perimeter streets are high-traffic areas, but closer to the golf course, streets are quiet. Flat, wide sidewalks make it easy to walk to a neighbor’s home or the club, while many yards are decorated with American flags and boast mature palm and oak trees.

Dining at Petroleum Club
Locals head to the Petroleum Club located at Sundale Country Club for fine dining. “It’s one of the best steakhouses in town, and you probably will need to make a reservation,” says Contreras. “It used to be located at the top floor of an office building, but when they redid the clubhouse a few years ago it moved over to Sundale.” The white tablecloth restaurant offers views of the golf course. Heart of India is a local favorite on the neighborhood's south end specializing in curry and masala dishes. The Stockdale Village Shopping Center located just north of the neighborhood off Stockdale Highway is where locals find groceries at Vons or Aldi. The shopping center also has chain restaurants like Mountain Mike’s Pizza and West Coast Sourdough.
