Contemporary 1980s homes on quarter-acre lots
Most single-family homes in Laurelglen sit on quarter-acre lots with manicured front lawns, plus backyard pools for cooling off during the hot Bakersfield summers. “Laurelglen has many different home builders, large lots and mature landscaping, so the homes each look different,” says Kyle Wigley, who’s sold homes here since 2006 and is the owner of Premier Home Advisors. Homes here were all built in the early 1980s, and many have that era's recessed entrances and gable windows. “They're well-built homes, and a lot of the original character remains," Gordon says. "If the homes have been well maintained, they’re great.” Single-level ranch-style homes are common here, though there are some two-story models, as well; layouts range between 1,000 and 2,800 square feet. Though size can affect prices, which typically range from $300,000 to $550,000, homes that have been recently remodeled tend to have higher prices. Two- and three-bedroom townhouse-style condos can cost between $250,000 to $350,000, depending on updates, plus monthly homeowners association fees between $100 and $400 that cover shared amenities like a community pool. There are also low-rise apartment complexes throughout the neighborhood.Jorkyball at Sportsplex Bakersfield
The 6-acre Corvallis Park and the 4-acre Westwold Park are within walking distance, both with playgrounds and green space. At Sportsplex Bakersfield, adults and kids can join soccer leagues, play a round of pickleball or learn the basics of jorkyball, a soccer-style game played on a plexiglass-walled court. Golfers can work on their swing at the nearby, semi-private Sundale Country Club, which has a par-72 course and practice areas. The Regal Edwards Bakersfield movie theater offers an air-conditioned place to relax and enjoy the latest blockbusters.Mock Trial at Bakersfield High
Local kids can start school at Laurelglen Elementary, which earns a C-plus from Niche, and then attend the B-minus-rated Tevis Junior High; both are within 2 miles of the neighborhood. Bakersfield High earns a B-plus and is roughly 6 miles away. Students here can join over 40 clubs, including Mock Trial, the Volleyball Club and the Animal Lovers Club. Nearby private schools include the A-plus-rated Stockdale Christian School, which serves pre-kindergarten through Grade 8.The annual Via Arté Italian Street Painting Festival
Each October, chalk art covers The Marketplace’s parking lot for the two-day Via Arté Italian Street Painting Festival. Since 1998, this event has drawn locals to watch the chalk artists at work, as well as try their own hand at making a chalk masterpiece.About 4 miles from the Golden State Highway
The Golden State Highway and the Westside Parkway are 4 miles away, and both lead 8 miles to downtown Bakersfield. Interstate 5 is about 13 miles away. The Golden Empire Transit bus stops in the neighborhood, and bike lanes and sidewalks offer a car-free alternative. Dignity Health’s Mercy Hospital Southwest is around 3 miles away, and Meadows Field Airport is a roughly 11-mile trip.Oak-grilled tri-tip at Salty’s BBQ & Catering
There are several popular local restaurants just south. Oak-grilled tri-tip and pulled pork are on the menu at Salty’s BBQ & Catering, which Gordon calls “a big deal.” The restaurant was featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” and dinner here is served at an outdoor picnic table or inside a train car. Gordon also recommends Bangkok Street Food and says, “It’s the best Thai food in town.” Sorella Ristorante Italiano has been the neighborhood go-to for Italian comfort food since the late '90s. The nearby Marketplace shopping center has fashion retailers like Talbots and White House Black Market; big-box stores like The Home Depot are to the south. Area grocery stores include Asia Market, Albertsons and Trader Joe’s.Ranked No. 1 for air pollution
The American Lung Association’s 2024 State of the Air report ranked Bakersfield as having the highest annual particle air pollution in the United States. Since Bakersfield is at the south end of the San Joaquin Valley, air pollution drifts down from Sacramento and the Bay Area and becomes stuck over the city. The IQAir AirVisual App can help residents monitor daily air quality.
