Oildale

Mobile homes south and new construction north
With a median price of $210,000, homes in the neighborhood vary widely. To the south, there are private mobile home communities with units for under $100,000. Mobile homes in the area sometimes are boarded up and abandoned, but others are double-wide with new updates. To the west, the homes get a bit newer and the lots more uniform; east of Airport Drive, there are more cottages and compact bungalows, which can sell between $200,000 and $300,000. Homes tend to be close together, with little space in front and back yards. There are also duplexes scattered throughout the neighborhood, usually as ranch-style homes.
Bakersfield public transportation through two routes
The Golden Empire Transit District bus route 22 enters Oildale and follows North Chester Avenue. Route 43 enters Oildale on Airport Drive before turning north on McCray Street. Both routes come through every 30 minutes. Meadows Field Airport borders the city to the west and offers both domestic and international flights.
Standard education to the south and agricultural high school program
To the southeast, Standard Elementary, for kindergarten through fifth grade, and Standard Middle, for sixth through eighth grade, share a campus and athletic fields. Both schools receive a C-minus from Niche. Students can then attend North High School in the heart of Oildale. The school, which receives a B on Niche, spans four blocks with multiple facilities and has an agricultural program, special courses such as web design, and an independent study program for students who need extra help.
Dining options along North Chester Avenue
Residents looking to eat out can grab a New York-style slice from Cataldo’s Pizzeria. The Sugar Mill serves breakfast all day, is open until nine and has quilted scenes of Oildale and Bakersfield decorating the walls. When it’s time for a grocery run, the Dulai Mini Mart or Walmart Neighborhood Market are both on North Chester Avenue.
Kern River views and skate park
At the southern end of Oildale, Riverview Park sits beside its namesake community center. The park covers over 20 acres and has spots for picnics and pickup basketball games as well as a playground and view of the Kern River. North Beardsley Park has Oildale’s only skatepark, but it also has two softball fields and plenty of green space over 7 acres.
Speedway to the north and local ministering
For heart-pounding excitement, catch a frenzied race at the Bakersfield Speedway which has events lined up throughout the year beginning in March and ending in late November. Bakersfield itself has events throughout the year, including live concerts at the Bakersfield Music Hall of Fame. The Church Without Walls offers events throughout the week, including a weekly movie night on Friday, and a barbecue on Thursday while offering a shower ministry to those in need; including a shower trailer and hygiene kits. “It’s an opportunity to get to know the community more,” Holt says. “It can take a long time to get through to someone. Just knowing their name and sharing God’s light is a huge part.”Important to Know
Kern County, which Oildale is a part, has been cited as having some of the worst air quality in the country by the American Lung Association. And with a backdrop of facilities like the Kern River Oil Field, residents can sometimes smell petroleum in the air.
