Living in Old River
Old River, located in the southwest corner of Bakersfield, is a charming blend of rich farmland and new housing developments. This quiet neighborhood offers the best of Central Valley living. Although just a few minutes’ drive to shopping areas, wineries and music venues, Old River residents enjoy a suburban, almost rural lifestyle. The north end of the neighborhood is developed but acres of vineyards and produce grow to the west and the south. The community is bordered to the north by Panama Lane. Valley Children’s Hospital, one of the nation’s premier pediatric healthcare facilities, is located here. The hospital is dedicated to caring for kids from prebirth to young adults.

Old River schools get high grades
Buena Vista Elementary School holds a B grade from the school ranking website, Niche. The school serves 717 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 24-1. Earl Warren Junior High has a B-plus grade and a 23-1 student-teacher ratio. Independence High School also has a B-plus rating. The high school has many athletic, academic and social clubs, including its United Nations Club which has been recognized by area news stations for its volunteer work both locally and internationally.

Awash with things to do
In April, the Bakersfield Marathon brings in runners from across the world. Getting to and from Old River
This is a car dependent area. From Old River, it is 11 miles to downtown Bakerfield. Meadows Field Airport is 18 miles away. Interstate 5 and Highway 99 may both be accessed via Panama Road and Taft Highway.
