Suburban Oildale neighborhood near the Amazon center
Parkview Estates sits on the northern end of Oildale, a suburb of Bakersfield and an area known for its proximity to the city’s massive oil fields. Today, Parkview Estates sits near logistics plants that have revitalized Bakersfield’s economy. “The new Amazon plant is not far from there, and the businesspeople will like how close it is to the airport,” says Samantha Sellers of Infinity Real Estate Services, who has over five years of experience in the Bakersfield market. “This part of town has seen a big change over the past 15 years as Bakersfield has expanded north.” Twenty-first-century homes in neighborhoods like Parkview Estates continue to pop up, as do national chains and local businesses along North Chester Avenue.
Mediterranean-style homes
While most homes in Parkview Estates are Craftsman ranch-style builds with stucco facades and tile roofs, there are also a few contemporary Tudor and two-story symmetrical houses. Most were built in the early 2000s, and prices typically range between $300,000 and $425,000; a few outliers cost closer to $635,000. “You’re getting a really good home for the price,” says Sellers. “Newer houses on the west side of town are almost double the price.” Homes sit close together on quiet, residential roads often leading to cul-de-sacs, and multicar garages sit at the end of private driveways leading to wide, well-lit sidewalks. Homes have modest front yards with large palm trees and American flags hanging from tall poles. Backyards are large and often have private pools. Homes in Parkview Estates are on septic tanks since they’re outside Bakersfield city limits.

Heat and air concerns
Like all residents near Bakersfield, Parkview Estates residents will have to deal with poor air quality because of the city’s agricultural and oil industries. Oil employment has declined statewide, but Kern County is still the 13th-highest oil-producing county in the nation, producing 72% of the oil from California. The area is also known for extreme heat in the summer, with temperatures regularly reaching 100 degrees.
