Riverfront suburb
Located on the desirable west side of Bakersfield, River Oaks is a suburban neighborhood lining the south side of the Kern River. Neighbors live in stucco and Spanish-style houses right next to each other on wide, paved suburban streets, grab coffee from a café down the street and walk their dogs to the riverfront park that leads to an outdoor amphitheater. Bakersfield struggles with air pollution and scorching heat in the summertime. Temperatures can exceed 100 degrees. But if the weather cooperates, living in River Oaks offers an idyllic southern California way of life. The school district is a draw to the area, says Anna Hernandez, a Realtor with RE/MAX Golden Empire in Bakersfield. “I have people who have purchased in that area exclusively for Ronald Reagan Elementary School,” says Hernandez. “It’s a highly sought-after school.”

21st century construction
Modern houses built with stucco and topped with Spanish-style roofs line the suburban streets of River Oaks. Well-manicured front lawns, paved light gray sidewalks and houses shaded by palm trees are typical sights. Houses have driveways and garages and sit right next to each other. Gates shield some of River Oaks’ neighborhoods from the outside world. Prices linger between $400,000 and $700,000. “It’s a newer neighborhood,” says Hernandez. “Everything has been built in the past 20-25 years.”

The public school, part of the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District, has a B-plus rating from Niche and about 900 students in kindergarten through sixth grades. Kids in the neighborhood attend the B-plus-rated Warren Junior High School for grades 7-8 and Stockdale High School (rated A) for grades 9-12. Stockdale is part of the public Kern High School District, which serves high school students in Bakersfield. Kids at Stockdale can participate in extracurricular activities like yearbook, band and orchestra and Mustang Musings, the school’s literary magazine. California State University – Bakersfield sits south of the River Walk area.
Floating stage
Bakersfield’s Kern River is the northern border of the neighborhood. Along the waterway is River Oaks Park, a quiet green space connected to the Kern River Parkway Bike Trail. People can walk, bike, jog or take their dogs east down the pathway and arrive at the Park at River Walk, a 32-acre Bakersfield park home to one of the city’s two outdoor amphitheaters. Outdoor concerts and movie screenings happen at the theater, where the stage looks like a floating island. Picnic tables, shady trees and lakes give the park extra character.

Chain restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen and Yard House came online over the last few years.
