Vibrant community centered around Panama Lane
Central America meets California in this Bakersfield suburb. Located just 15 minutes south of the city, South Panama Lane is a small neighborhood that boasts a vibrant community rooted in a selection of ethnic locales that celebrate its Latin heritage. Centered around Panama Lane, the neighborhood features an eclectic mix of stores, food trucks and residential areas.
Spanish Revival styles reflect Central American heritage
The L-shaped residences of South Panama Lane are framed with small yet verdant front lawns and sunny sidewalks. Traditional styles are scattered between the Mediterranean-influenced homes in this neighborhood, with two-car garages and three-bedroom layouts most common. “Most of the homes date back to the 60s, 70s and 80s, though there are pockets of new construction with bigger homes,” says local Realtor Shanti Brinsfield of Watson Realty. Newer construction features more modern Tuscan styles, though the stucco exteriors and terracotta tiled roofs maintain the classic Spanish Revival look. The median price for real estate here is $366,000 and typically ranges between $145,000 for a smaller single-story cottage and $425,000 for a five-bedroom California ranch spanning over 2,000 square feet.

Mixed-use spaces at Stiern Park
Nearby Stiern Park and Rexland Acres Park provide an outdoor haven for kids and adults alike. Playdates take place at the playgrounds, people walk their dogs along the paved paths, and locals take in the distant mountain views of the Sequoia National Forest from the park's picnic tables and benches. For a change in scenery, residents can head to national parks like the Sequoia National Forest and the Los Padres National Forest, or they can reach the shores of the Pacific in 2 hours' time.
Ethnic options celebrate Latin roots
South Panama Lane offers a diverse range of ethnic dining and shopping opportunities that highlight the area's Latin heritage. Residents get a taste of the local flavor at local staples like Mariscos Las Caqualitas, a Mexican seafood restaurant that serves colorful platters and delectable tacos. Vallarta Supermarkets provides local specialty delicacies and fresh produce along with other household and grocery needs. “You have your basics, grocery stores and Hispanic markets very close,” Brinsfield says. “And if residents want to go clothes shopping, they go to the Valley Plaza, River Walk or Rosedale Shopping Center.”
Proximity to historic Highway 99
Proximity to historic Golden State Highway 99 is a huge benefit for South Panama Lane residents, connecting them to Downtown Bakersfield in under 15 minutes. “It’s close to the freeway, and people have easy access,” Brinsfield notes. Several bus stops are scattered along Panama Lane, providing easy access to public transportation for commuters. Travelers may also catch domestic flights from Meadow Field Airport, just a few miles north of Downtown Bakersfield.
