A charming southwest Bakersfield community
Spice possesses a suburban charm in southwestern Bakersfield, with streets named after seasonings such as parsley, nutmeg, curry and cumin. Only 7 miles from downtown, the neighborhood is close to city center amenities while still maintaining a laidback atmosphere. It’s an appealing draw for those who want both convenience and community, with a friendly housing market, two well-maintained parks and walkable errand essentials. “It's affordable living. You can have a single-family home while still being able to afford to go out and travel and do all those other things," says William Gordon, a Realtor with Watson Realty who has been selling homes in the area for over 15 years. "There's an option for everyone in the same community."
Suburban streets in Spice
Spice is a suburb of neatly looped cul-de-sacs and wide sidewalks shaded by palm trees. “The neighborhood is more established than nearby areas, but the homes tend to be smaller,” Gordon says. “It’s a great place for first-time homebuyers.” 1970s and 1980s one-story homes are priced between $200,000 and $400,000, depending on renovations like fireplaces and in-ground pools. Properties sit close together and have wooden or metal fences separating them. Homes with pools have completely concrete backyards, while others are grassy. People can park their vehicles in carports or driveways.

Bakersfield struggles with air pollution due to its industrial and farming nature. As of 2023, efforts to better the air quality are being noticed. "This year's report represents the best in terms of the fewest ozone pollution days. There's still a long way to go but the trend is in the right direction," says Mariela Ruacho, the manager of clean air advocacy at the American Lung Association.
