Mature Oaks among a freshly planted jungle
Surrounded by tranquil neighborhood green spaces and a premier shopping plaza, mature trees stand tall among a freshly planted jungle of communities, like The Oaks, in Southwest Bakersfield. “These are not cookie-cutter mass-produced homes,” says Evelyn Martinez, Realtor at Agentcor Realty, who has lived in the area for over 20 years. “These are custom homes on larger lots. They have more nooks and crannies, bigger bedrooms and they’re older. They’re a bit different, but the homes here have a ton of character.”
The homes are mostly single story but surrounded by lush green grass and mature trees.

Cul-de-sacs with Mediterranean-style detailing
The Oaks is reminiscent of an old-growth forest with neatly trimmed hedges and lofty evergreens that tower over meticulously maintained lawns. Single-level Mediterranean and Spanish-style homes from the 1990s bask in the neighborhood’s cul-de-sacs. The average home may incorporate stucco or brick siding with Mediterranean details, like tile roofs and verandas supported by columns. Most homes have two-car garages, and back lots often conceal in-ground pools. Home prices start at $250,000 and reach $700,000. Craftsman-style homes range from $270,000 to $580,000, while ranch-style homes hover around $340,000 to $690,000. Homes nestled between Pin Oak Park and Haggin Oaks Park, as well as within walking distance of The Marketplace, tend to be higher in price.

It’s central, and you can find everything there. It’s a cute little shopping center,” Martinez says. White Lane leads to local restaurants, like Spencer’s Cafe, a vintage-style diner serving classic breakfast items like pancakes. Sorella Ristorante Italiano is a steakhouse with pasta dishes and classical décor. Firehouse Southwest Station is a spacious pub with bowling alleys, pool tables and a variety menu.
