A popular northwest Bakersfield suburb
With its manicured lawns, highly rated schools and nearby shopping centers, Westlakes embodies the suburban lifestyle that makes northwest Bakersfield so popular. “It's a great area to raise a family, with ample access to public parks,” says William Gordon, who’s sold homes here since 2007 and is the team lead of the Gordon Team at Watson Realty. Almondale Park and Polo Park are nearby, and there are several shopping centers within 2 miles. The RiverLakes Community Church’s large campus is on Calloway Drive, and Rosedale Highway, which leads 8 miles to downtown Bakersfield, is around a mile away. With so many nearby amenities, homes here don’t stay on the market long.
New traditional homes on cul-de-sacs
Palm trees tower over Westlakes’ neat lawns and sidewalk-lined cul-de-sacs, most of which have a basketball hoop in the street for neighborhood kids to play after school. Most homes are 1990s and 2000s single-level new traditional houses with clay-tiled roofs and brick or stone exterior details; these usually have attached two- or three-car garages, and lots large enough for a backyard pool. Layouts range from 1,200 to 2,400 square feet. Homes cost between about $350,000 and $650,000, and typically sell after 23 days on the market, compared to the national average of 44 days.

Local kids can start school at Almondale Elementary, which earns a B-plus from Niche, and then attend the A-minus-rated Freedom Middle. At the A-minus-rated Centennial High, kids can join the school’s robotics team, called CyberHawks 7983, who in 2024 travelled to Dallas to compete in the VEX Robotics World Championships. Nearby private schools include the Country Christian School, which serves kindergarten through Grade 8 and is unrated by Niche and GreatSchools.

Near Rosedale Highway
Rosedale Highway is about a mile away and the Golden State Highway is a 4-mile trip; both lead roughly 8 miles to downtown Bakersfield. Interstate 5 is about 18 miles away. The Golden Empire Transit bus stops along Hageman Road. Bike lanes and sidewalks make the area friendly for cyclists and pedestrians. Bakersfield Family Medical Center, which has primary and urgent care, is nearby, and Dignity Health Mercy Hospital Southwest is 4 miles away. Meadows Field Airport is a 7-mile trip.
Baseball at Polo Park
“Polo Park is a great amenity for the entire area,” Gordon says. The 40-acre park is most popular for its sports fields, including several baseball diamonds and soccer pitches that host youth and adult leagues, but the splash pad here attracts a crowd during Bakersfield’s hot summers. The 12-acre Almondale Park has open green space and paved walking paths, as well as a playground and basketball court. The public, 18-hole Links at RiverLakes Ranch golf course is also nearby, offering private instruction and a Junior Golf Academy where kids can learn and compete. For indoor fun, residents can head to Firehouse Rosedale Station, a bowling alley and billiards hall.

The Starlight Movie Project’s free movies in the park
From March through October, the Starlight Movie Project hosts free movie screenings in nearby parks, including Almondale Park and Polo Park. Residents can set up lawn chairs to watch family-friendly movies like “Inside Out 2” and “Finding Nemo,” and they can pack their own picnic dinners or buy snacks from the mobile concession stand.
High levels of air pollution
Bakersfield’s location at the south end of the San Joaquin Valley causes air pollution to stall over the city, leading the American Lung Association to rank it No. 1 for annual particle air pollution in the United States. The local news posts alerts on bad air quality days, and residents can also monitor the air on the IQAir AirVisual App.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
