A friendly New York community near the water
Just a few miles from the South Shore, Baldwin is a typical Long Island hamlet in many ways. Its quiet suburban streets are lined with sidewalks, and residents get more yard space than they would a few miles to the west in Queens, but Manhattan isn’t too far — about 34 miles. The water is a short drive or bike ride away, allowing locals to balance waterfront hobbies with a decent commute. Its welcoming community is another major plus for residents. “My neighbors are the best people in the world. Some of my neighbors are my best friends,” says Paul Conforti, a licensed associate broker at Douglas Elliman who has lived in Baldwin for 38 years and has sold homes here for about 20 years. “They’ll take my garbage cans in if I forget them, and I’ll take theirs in — that kind of thing. There are some neighborhoods where people don’t talk to each other, but not us.”

A mix of home styles spanning Tudors to new development
Home styles are incredibly varied in Baldwin; Cape Cods and colonial-styles are common, just like on the rest of Long Island, but Tudors are also easy to find here. “Besides new constructions, we have the split-levels and splanches, but we have many, many older homes like the Tudors and Craftsman-style homes that attract a lot of buyers,” says Frank Pignataro, a Baldwin native as well as the real estate broker at Sailing Home Realty with 29 years of experience selling homes. The median single-family home price hovers around $675,000, which is more than 11% higher year-over-year. On average homes stay on the market for 57 days. Baldwin has a CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. According to FBI data, Baldwin’s crime rate is 12% lower than the national average.

Highly rated Baldwin schools
The Baldwin Union Free School District gets an A-minus from Niche, serving as a major draw to the neighborhood. Children can attend one of five elementary schools, before moving on to Baldwin Middle School and Baldwin High School, which both receive A-minus grades. Highly rated schools within the private sector include the nearby A-rated Sacred Heart Academy.

Major highways, LIRR station and nearby hospitals
Sunrise Highway and Southern State Parkway both run through Baldwin, making it easy to explore the island by car. But for many, the hamlet’s most important feature is its Long Island Rail Road Station. “The Long Island Rail Road runs basically right through the middle of Baldwin,” Conforti says. “So, it’s a nice, easy commute.” From Baldwin Station, it takes about 45 minutes to reach Manhattan’s Penn Station. Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital and Mercy Hospital are both just over 2 miles away, and John F. Kennedy International Airport is 13 miles away.
Smaller local parks in Baldwin plus the nearby Baldwin Park
The area’s most iconic park is Baldwin Park, located 3 miles away in Baldwin Harbor. The huge waterfront park features a skate park, athletic spaces and a dog run. Smaller parks and green spaces closer to home include Coes Neck Park, a modest tract popular year-round for its two playgrounds, sprinkler splash area in the summer and sports courts for basketball and tennis. Silver Lake Park and Milburn Creek Park are favorite spots for daily walks and runs near the water, and Milburn Creek Park also offers a boat launch. With Long Beach just 7 miles away and Jones Beach 10 miles away, the Atlantic Ocean is easily accessible for a day on the beach.

Local restaurants alongside major retailers
Grand Avenue, Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway are home to most of Baldwin’s shops and restaurants. Novi Restaurant is one of Baldwin’s most recognizable spots. Pignataro says that the name stands for New Old Venice Inn, a nod to the restaurant’s previous name. “That’s been a local staple here for a long time,” he says. Nearby, Kitty O’Hara’s has a classic pub atmosphere and live music on the weekends, and Viva Tulum is the go-to for tacos. Baldwin has local businesses along Merrick Road, including boutiques and a tattoo parlor, but there are also a few major retailers like Petco and Best Buy. Grocery options include Stop & Shop and Ideal Food Basket of Baldwin.

Grand Baldwin Festival
Baldwin is generally a quiet suburb, but every year, residents gather for the Grand Baldwin Festival. Held during the fall in the parking lot behind the Baldwin Public Library, the festival features a marketplace with local vendors selling art and locally grown or produced food. The fest also includes an art showcase, live music and activities for all ages. Other community events include an annual tree-lighting ceremony.

Hurricane season on Long Island
While hurricane season can impact Long Island, Baldwin’s location a few miles inland grants the hamlet more protection against flooding. However, the area has a major risk of high winds during these storms.
