There are still some places where the crow of a rooster functions as an alarm clock. Eau Galle, a small Saint Croix County town just south of Baldwin Village, is one of these places. Quiet, country living is on offer here, with homes sitting on lots with plenty of acreage—as much as 80 acres for some homes. While you lose the ability to walk to your neighbor’s house for a cup of sugar, you gain a sense of privacy and seclusion. Mornings can be spent tending to your yard, perhaps a garden overflowing with blooming flowers or home-grown produce.

There’s room for horse stables, barns for livestock and chicken coops, and the farming lifestyle is prevalent in this area. Large stretches of cornfields and farmland sit between homes, providing the feeling of being off the beaten path. Homes sit on huge lots, and the acreage is often wooded with lots of deer and other wildlife, making it ideal for the outdoor enthusiast. Some homes in Eau Galle were built as far back as 1900, while others were built in the late 20th century and 2000s. You’ll find Craftsman-style, ranch-style and Gothic-revival homes, all offering plenty of space for keeping farm animals or merely cultivating an impressive garden. Home prices in the area range from $110,000 to $765,000.

Children in the area attend Spring Valley Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of B-minus. Next, kids attend Viking Middle School, which has an overall Niche grade of B-plus and has been ranked as the number four best public middle school in St. Croix County. Teenagers attend Baldwin-Woodville High School, which has an overall Niche grade of B and was ranked as the number five best public high school in St. Croix County.

Just southeast of the area is Eau Galle Reservoir, a large lake surrounded by scenic woods and wetlands. Locals head here to boat, fish, hike, or camp under the stars. Northwest of the neighborhood is Heritage Park, on 60th Avenue in Baldwin Village. The park features a playground, ball fields, soccer fields, gazebos and grills. Also nearby is Windmill Park, a two-acre park along Highway 63 in Baldwin. It gets its name from the Baldwin Windmill, which sits at the park’s center. Considered the “ornament of the village,” the Baldwin Windmill was constructed in 1987 by local volunteers, representing the sizeable Dutch community that’s lived in the area. The park features the small Baldwin Creek, which runs along its northern edge. Locals can gather at the pretty park’s picnic tables for community celebrations.

The Lee-Kay Family Educational County Forest is south of Eau Galle, open to visitors from sunrise to sunset. Visitors can explore the 0.6-mile-long self-guided hiking trail loop, where they will encounter over 15 individual tree identification and interpretation markers. You’ll find mostly oak, maple and basswood trees here. When residents get hungry, there are some familiar eateries nearby along I-94. Dairy Queen, Hardee’s Culver’s and A&W Restaurant are just a few names. Fast casual Indian cuisine is available at Punjabi Rasoi, while Phoenix Grill & Event Center offers a more upscale dining experience in its warm saloon setting. Locals grab groceries and other essentials at Nilsson’s Foods, just minutes away. If you’re looking for country living with plenty of privacy, Eau Galle may be worth a further look.
