A state forest and a rural atmosphere on the outskirts of Worcester
One of Templeton’s four villages, Baldwinville offers the pastoral peace often synonymous with areas on the outskirts of Worcester. “You have to want to be in a quiet, rural setting if you’re going to live here,” says Kerryann Murphy, a real estate agent with Lamacchia Realty, who has sold several homes in the area. “Houses are spread out, even if they’re not on a farm.” Residents can camp or swim at Otter River State Forest, an over 1,000-acre green space spanning the village’s northern region. The Ware River Rail Trail has multiple access points to the east, providing a 15-mile route from Barre to Baldwinville. A few locally owned eateries in brick-façade storefronts line Central Street, and regional grocery stores are a quick drive away in nearby Gardner.

Baldwinville is brimming with homes built throughout the 1850s to the early 1900s. White stick styles and pastel Queen Annes have three bedrooms and unfenced, quarter-acre lots towards the village’s center. On the outskirts, apple orchards sit behind Colonial Revivals, and pine trees shade gambrel farmhouses on 2-acre parcels or larger. “Leominster is the most expensive town around here, so the farther you get from it, the more affordable the houses get," says Susan Wright, a Realtor with Exit New Options Real Estate, who has sold houses in the area for almost a decade. About 20 miles east, Leominster homes have an average selling price of $400,000, whereas Baldwinville properties typically cost between $215,000 and $350,000.

Narragansett Regional School District and a wind turbine
Children here are in the Narragansett Regional School District, where every school has a C-plus grade from Niche. First, they may attend Templeton Elementary and Narragansett Middle before continuing to Narragansett High for eighth through 12th grade. In 2010, a 383-foot-tall wind turbine was built outside the high school, generating 3.5 million kilowatts of electricity per year. It’s also the finish line for the LeClerc Wind Turbine 5K, which raises money for the cross-country program at the beginning of every August.
Narragansett Middle School has 350 students in grades 5-7.
Narragansett Regional High School has 421 students in grades 8-12.

Cross-country skiing through Otter River State Forest and hiking along the Ware River Rail Trail
Locals can hear the crack of a baseball bat from Gilman-Waite Field, a youth sports complex also home to soccer fields and a basketball court. The Otter River State Forest is accessible off Winchendon Road. Towering white pine trees shade 76 campsites and three green and beige yurts, which are available to rent. Daily activities include swimming from the sandy shore surrounding Beaman Pond and largemouth bass fishing at the namesake river. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders trek the 7 miles of trailway here during the summer, while cross-country skiers and snowmobiles use the area throughout the winter months. The private, 18-hole Templewood Golf Course hosts numerous competitions and leagues, like the women's group every Tuesday afternoon and the senior men's club on Wednesday morning. Passing over several wooden bridges, gravel terrain and the occasional sidewalk, the Ware River Rail Trail has several entry points off Baldwinville Road.

Quaint eateries on Central Street and grocery shopping in nearby Gardner
A few locally owned eateries are along Central Street just off U.S. Route 202, like Baldwinville Station, a homey breakfast hub. Red picnic tables sit outside Lee’s Hot Dog Stand, where locals have ordered signature franks, fried clams and ice cream sundaes since 1937. Pool tables fill The Thirsty Turtle Pub, a late-night dive with weekly karaoke nights. The area has a few shopping options, from freshly made cheddar at Smith’s Country Cheese to vintage goods at Nouveaux Riches. “There aren’t really any big-box shopping options in Templeton, let alone Baldwinville. You have to drive to Gardener for that,” says Murphy. Hannaford and Price Chopper are the closest grocery stores, about 5 miles east in Gardner, where residents will also find the Heywood Hospital.
Near Baldwinville you can shop at The Velvet Goose and find gifts for all occasions.
Village Pizza boasts a large menu of pizzas, subs, and pasta.
Nearby residents can head over to the Gardner Ale House for a beer with friends.

A quick commute to Worcester and Keen
"People here work all over,” says Wright. “Some work locally within the county, some go to Boston, some commute north to the Keen area.” A 31-mile trip south leads to Worcester’s core and the Worcester Regional Airport. New Hampshire’s Keen area is about 28 miles north, and Boston is 80 miles east. A Montachusett Regional Transit Authority bus stop is along Central Street, following a route from Gardener to Winchendon.
