A mix of Baltimore styles
Houses in Bellona-Gittings consist mostly of detached single-family homes. There is a healthy mix of styles, including Federal Revivals, stately colonials, Victorian cottages and ranch-style homes. “There’s no specific style,” Campbell says. “I just sold a traditional red brick house, but it sits on over 1 acre of land, which is a rarity in the city.” Regardless of style, most houses have four or five bedrooms, two-car garages and meticulous landscaping and price between $500,000 and $850,000 depending on age and condition. Townhouses are also available for those looking for smaller alternatives, with prices starting around $365,000.Outdoor adventures at Lake Roland
The proximity of Bellona-Gittings to Baltimore’s green space is a big draw with buyers. “Everybody has got a five-minute drive to Lake Roland, which is a great resource,” Campbell says. “The Lake Roland Nature Center has environmental education courses for kids and adults. People bring kayaks or just fish in the lake.” There are miles of trails winding through the park surrounding Lake Roland as well, so residents can hike beneath the trees and along the shores of the reservoir. Golfers will appreciate being next door to The Elkridge Club, where members can meander around the 18-hole course or lounge by the pool. From Roland Park to Gilman and Bryn Mawr
Children in Bellona-Gittings are zoned to attend Roland Park Elementary and Middle School, a combined institution that earns a B-plus from Niche and offers after-school programs in dance and drama. High school students in Baltimore have their choice of the city’s secondary education centers. The closest public option is Tunbridge Public Charter School, which scores a B-minus. In addition, two of the most well-regarded private schools in the city are right along Roland Avenue. Young men can attend the Gilman School, rated A-plus, which has served the community since 1897 and was the first country day school in the U.S. The Bryn Mawr School, also rated A-plus, teaches young women and is ranked Niche’s No. 1 STEM high school in Maryland. The Summer Songs series at Belvedere
Every summer, neighbors gather just across York Road at the Belvedere Square Market. In addition to hosting plenty of dining options, this venue puts on an annual Summer Sounds concert series that showcases live music from local bands. Bellona-Gittings is also just 9 miles from Camden Yards, where local baseball fans can grab a National Bohemian and take in an Orioles game.Interstate 83 and Northern Parkway
The neighborhood’s proximity to major thoroughfares like Interstate 83, York Road and Northern Parkway make it easy for residents to get where they need to be. Interstate 83 connects Bellona-Gittings 8 miles south to the Inner Harbor and 18 miles to Baltimore Washington International Airport, while Towson Town Center is just 3 miles north on York Road. Several bus lines run up both York Road and Charles Street, connecting residents to the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus and to nightlife destinations like Federal Hill and Fells Point.Pinehurst Wine Shoppe and Charlesmead Pharmacy
Residents of Bellona-Gittings shop for groceries at the Giant in York Road Plaza, where they can also find a Rite Aid and a Walgreens. Along Bellona Avenue, two community staples draw generational visitors. “Pinehurst Wine Shoppe really sets the neighborhood apart,” Campbell says. This wine, beer and spirits shop has served Bellona-Gittings since 1985 and is known for its knowledgeable staff. Right next door, Charlesmead Pharmacy is known for its old-time atmosphere. Locals can refill prescriptions here, but the Pharmacy also features a lunch counter with weekly sandwich specials and snowballs, Baltimore’s favorite frozen dessert. “People who come back to Baltimore after 40 years bring their grandkids there and reminisce about the good times they had,” Campbell adds.Split between Baltimore City and Baltimore County
Because the county line winds its way through Bellona-Gittings, there is a chance that prospective homeowners will be surprised by their monthly bills. “It’s kind of weird how this works, but this is the only place I know of where the county line cuts through the neighborhood,” Campbell says. “Some homes have two tax bills because of that, which can be a bit of a shock. You just want to make sure you ask and know what to expect.” The neighborhood also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, indicating violent and property crime rates below the national average of 4.
