Canton
Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21224
Rowhouses and waterfront condos
Homes in this area are primarily townhouses and rowhouses, many with tiny fenced-in backyards opening out to back alleys. A few condominiums can also be found in the neighborhood, usually along the waterfront. Trees line many streets, a few hundred of which were planted by the Canton Community Association. Some units have angled parking spots in front, while others have room to park in the back alley. Modest two-bedroom units start at around $160,000, while luxury units with water views can sell for over $1 million. Something buyers should be aware of when house hunting, cautions Undem, are the nuances of the local property taxes. “In the City of Baltimore, property taxes are more than double what they are in the surrounding counties,” he says. “And you could look at four identical houses with four different tax assessments and have four different tax bills, only because the tax assessor hasn’t gotten around to coming out and updating them yet.”Parks with stellar views
The Canton Waterfront Park offers city dwellers eight acres of green spaces, a mile-long promenade, and harbor views. Residents can share a picnic with friends, stroll the promenade, or cast a line from the fishing pier. Patterson Park, a 133-acre recreational space that borders the neighborhood to the north, offers athletic fields, a public swimming pool, and even a seasonal ice rink. Residents can stop in at the park’s Observatory, a grand three-story pagoda, for gorgeous views in all directions. There’s also a neighborhood dog park that offers a safe space where pets can romp and play without worry.Nearby Baltimore County Public Schools
Baltimore City Public Schools serves the neighborhood. Students attend schools like Hampstead Hill Academy, which serves students from kindergarten through eighth grades and earns an overall grade of B by Niche. High school students can apply to the school of their choice. Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is within about 2 miles of home. The school, which is graded C by Niche, offers specialized programs in health sciences, including a four- to six-year program where students can earn a high school diploma, a no-cost associate's degree, and a first-in-line status for job placement upon the program’s completion.Canton’s can’t-miss events
Canton Waterfront Park is a favorite spot for locals to catch fireworks, festivals, and airshows. During the summer, the park hosts local radio station WTMD’s First Thursday Festivals concert series. Featuring artists from around the nation, this series draws approximately 10,000 residents weekly for free music and good vibes. The Canton Community Association also keeps residents informed about what’s going on in the neighborhood, including local events, informational meetings, and volunteer opportunities.Getting to and from Canton
Taking stoplights into account, Canton is within 10-12 minutes of Interstate 95 and Interstate 895, according to Undem. The neighborhood has multiple bus stops, but most people get around by car. Prospective buyers who are planning on commuting south from the neighborhood for work via the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel should factor in the cost of tolls — Undem says many southward-bound commuters opt to live in neighborhoods south of the tunnel, like in Locust Point, for that reason. The shopping and dining scene
At the heart of this neighborhood lies Canton Square. A plaza surrounding O’Donnell Park, the square is known for its restaurants, pub-style bars, shops, and boutiques. For good seafood, residents can try Mama’s On the Half Shell; for Mexican with a flair, Nacho Mamas serves up margaritas in hubcaps and nachos to write home about. Come nighttime, this square is filled with happy-hour fun. Beyond the square, “Canton is unique because, on almost every corner, there’s a really nice establishment for takeout or a bar,” Undem says. There’s also waterfront dining; for residents looking for water views with their crabcakes, Raw & Refined serves up seafood and craft cocktails from the largest deck bar in the city. And when it’s time to fill the fridge, the neighborhood Safeway has all the necessities covered — and a large parking lot.
