Cozy residences, kosher restaurants and local synagogues
Located north of the Western Run River, Cheswolde is a quiet residential neighborhood with stone cottages and condominium communities. “Cheswolde has always been a very desirable area because of its proximity to the Downtown Baltimore Business area, yet very suburban feel because of all the green spaces and mature trees. For many years, it was a melting pot neighborhood, but in recent years, there has been a large influx of Orthodox Jews looking for affordable homes in a suburban setting, yet are still close to synagogues and other institutions and businesses that cater to their lifestyle needs. Consequently, home prices have risen dramatically,” says Joe Bondar of Bondar Realty, who has been selling homes in the area for about 40 years. “The Cheswolde neighborhood also features many apartment complexes in all price ranges and tend to attract not only Orthodox Jews but many individuals of different ages, religions and ethnicities." Locals choose Cheswolde so they can walk to nearby Orthodox synagogues and gather with community members during major holidays and events. Outdoorsy locals can bike the Jones Falls Trail near the Western Run River, and the nearby Greenspring Shopping Center has a Safeway grocery and a few local kosher restaurants. Reisterstown Road is a major shopping destination for Northwest Baltimore and is great for commuters who need to get into the city or head up to Owings Mills.
Stone cottages and family split-levels in Cheswolde
Homes in Cheswolde can range from brick and stone cottages to ranch-style dwellings with New England aesthetics like Cape Cod dormer windows or stone and mortar chimneys. Larger residences consist of four-bedroom split-levels or Colonial Revivals with spacious yards for big families. “I have lived in Cheswolde for a long time and have moved four times but always stayed in the neighborhood. I love the people and the ambiance of the area. There is a wide mix of older and younger people, so no one feels left out,” Bondar says. “It’s also very convenient. Not only are we close to the downtown area and the Baltimore Beltway, but also to shopping, public transportation and the Baltimore Washington International (BWI) airport which is only about 25 minutes by car.” Most residences range in price from $350,000 to $550,000. A few unique homes with over 3,000 square feet can cost between $600,000 and over $800,000. There is also a selection of condo units and townhouses located on the west side of Cheswolde. “There are two condo buildings in Cheswolde: The Towers and Bartonwood,” Bondar says. “Most of the units at The Towers are quite large with nearly 1,700 square feet of living space with ample parking. The surrounding expansive grounds feature beautiful, manicured greenery with mature trees and walking paths as well as a spacious meeting room, pool, gym and tennis courts.” Potential buyers can find units that range in price from $150,000 to over $350,000.
Kosher restaurants and access to Reisterstown Road
Most residents can find what they need at the Greenspring Shopping Center on Smith Avenue. The center has a Safeway grocery store and Rite Aid pharmacy, as well as access to a dentist, bank, urgent care and auto repair shop. A few small kosher restaurants are located here, as well. Serengeti Baltimore combines kosher African and Southern cuisine to create a unique experience in town. Cocoaccino's just next door is a cafeteria-style kosher cafe with all-day breakfast and freshly brewed coffee. At lunchtime, diners can indulge in pizza, sandwiches and smoothies. North on Greenspring Avenue is Blue Stone Park, where walkers can hike around Quarry Lake and stop in at nearby shops, like Rita’s Italian Ice and Frozen Custard. For more variety, drivers can always head to Reisterstown Road, which is the area’s major thoroughfare leading north to Garrison and Owings Mills.
Public and private Baltimore City schools
Depending on which side of Greenspring Avenue their houses are on, public school students will attend kindergarten through eighth grade at either the newly rebuilt Cross Country Elementary Middle School, graded a C, or The Mount Washington School, which scores a B-minus. Baltimore students may then apply to any high school of their choosing. Nearby high schools include Western High School, which is also graded a B-minus. The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, which is known for its STEM fields and humanities programs, is graded an A. “Although there is a brand-new Elementary school adjacent to Cheswolde, most of the children, especially among the Orthodox, attend private Jewish schools,” Bondar says. The Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School is graded an A on Niche and is considered the No. 2 best Jewish school in Maryland.
Rail trails, scenic rocks and golf courses near Cheswolde
The Jones Falls Trail runs from downtown all the way north to Cylburn, stretching through Baltimore’s natural and urban areas. Cheswolde residents can reach it via Cross Country Boulevard and take it south throughout the city, passing through the Cylburn Arboretum and Druid Hill Park. On Western Run Drive, visitors flock to the It’s A Rock park, which is not a park at all but a stretch of lawn that features a large boulder. The boulder is known for attracting selfie-takers and those who enjoy a good meme. About 3 miles east of Cheswolde is The Suburban Club private golf course, which features lush fairways and luxury amenities for its members, such as card rooms, a fitness center, an outdoor swimming pool and indoor tennis courts.
Accessing the greater Baltimore area
Like most of Northwest Baltimore, Cheswolde benefits from being right next to Interstate 83. Drivers can head 8 miles south to downtown. Once there, they can explore the Inner Harbor’s attractions and restaurants or access the Johns Hopkins Hospital for emergencies or checkups. To reach the Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI), Cheswolde residents can head 22 miles south on Interstate 695. Though there are not many public transportation options in Cheswolde, those traveling along Reisterstown Road will have access to dozens of bus stops. Those who prefer the train can head to the Rogers Avenue Metro Station, which is less than 3 miles southwest of Cheswolde.
Cheswolde community events and resources
Being part of the Orthodox Jewish community is a huge draw to the area for those who like to meet people and get involved. “There’s an active Jewish Community Center (JCC) less than a mile away on Park Heights Avenue, which welcomes members regardless of their religious affiliations. They offer a multitude of activities and classes for all age groups; an Olympic size indoor swimming pool; and indoor basketball courts. Plus, there’s a neighborhood watch group and a volunteer ambulance service,” Bondar says. Considered part of the Baltimore Eruv, Cheswolde falls within the Hatzalah Emergency Medical Service’s free ambulance transportation. “The response rate is very, very quick. Within a couple of minutes, they’re there. Same with the neighborhood watch group.” The Cheswolde neighborhood also features several large and very active Orthodox Congregations offering services and activities daily to over 3,000 families.
The Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course
Though it may be across the river, the nearby Pimlico Race Course is home to the famous Preakness Stakes horse race, which takes place every year in May. Cheswolde residents may choose to head down to watch thoroughbreds gallop around the track or bet on their favorite horse. The race was named for Preakness, a famous Massachusetts thoroughbred horse from the late 1800s.
