A shopping and dining-oriented neighborhood with renovations in progress
Before she was a household name, Oprah Winfrey called this neighborhood home. Opened in 1965, the Village of Cross Keys was a chic planned community in North Baltimore. Designed by real estate developer James Rouse, Cross Keys was built around a commercial village square and consists of condos and townhouses, plus amenities like walking paths, swimming pools, and tennis courts. Under new management as of 2021, renovations of this unique community are underway. Upon completion, residents will enjoy a newly-curated shopping and dining experience. “We’re seeing some high-end shops and restaurants taking over some of the vacancies,” says Ben Garner, Realtor and owner of Garner and Co., who has been selling homes in the area for eight years. “They have a great anchor tenant called Easy Like Sunday, and it’s one of the best brunch places in the city.” Garner says that because of the revitalization, now is the time to get into Cross Keys. “Prices are still affordable, but it’s essentially going to be a live-work-play community, and I believe this will be appreciated,” he says.
A retail and dining village in revitalization mode
As part of the neighborhood’s revitalization, a slew of new tenants have been signing on to open up shop in Cross Keys throughout 2024. Currently, residents can walk over to Easy Like Sunday for breakfast, lunch, or brunch, with more options to look forward to in the coming year, such as Cece’s Roland Park, an upscale Mediterranean-inspired concept with a comfortable outdoor patio, and ZaVino Italian Marketplace, which will offer Italian deli sandwiches, pizza, and groceries. As far as retail, major names like Talbots and Williams Sonoma coexist with local favorites, like The Store Ltd. Store owner, designer, and local icon Betty Cooke’s curated collection of jewelry, handbags, décor, and more has been delighting patrons since she opened her doors in 1965.

Homes in Cross Keys consist of condominiums and townhouses. House hunters can choose from a variety of sizes and styles, such as two-story midcentury townhouses featuring two or three bedrooms and or garden-style condos ranging from studios to three-bedrooms units. Cross Keys’s landscaping, featuring beautiful flowering trees, shrubs, and hedges, adds another layer of appeal. As for its housing prices, “I do think that this neighborhood is going to appreciate, and I’m already starting to see that appreciation since the developer announced their plans,” says Garner. “A couple of years ago, you could get a livable condo there for under $100,000 easily, but now it’s more like the mid-$100,000s, and I think that’s only going to go up.”
