Positive changes and community growth in Franklintown Road
Although the area’s overall CAP Index Crime Score is 4, in line with the national average, Franklintown Road has higher scores for violent crimes. However, local groups, like Catholic Charities of Baltimore and city planners, strive to improve safety and revive the community here. For example, Catholic Charities is building an Intergenerational Center, set to be complete in 2025, which will provide a variety of initiatives and support for community members. Some programs will include substance abuse services, an early learning center and a pantry for groceries. Homes owned by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have lower prices, allowing new homebuyers to move into the neighborhood while it’s still relatively affordable. Investors have also taken many of these lower-priced rowhouses and rehabilitated them.A wide range of rowhouse prices
The neighborhood primarily features Federal-style rowhouses constructed in the early 1920s. Small front porches and compact yards accompany most homes, often bordered by a chain-link fence. Some houses incorporate bay windows on the second story, and many have shingled awnings. Move-in ready, newly renovated builds often sell in the $150,000 to $230,000 range, while homes in need of repair typically cost between $15,000 and $100,000. Low-priced properties often go up for online auction, with deposits beginning at $5,000 or $10,000.Getting active at Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park next door
Franklintown Road’s local outdoor gathering space is Rosemont Park. Children can play on the jungle gym or relax in the grassy areas, shaded by towering Callery pear trees. For a larger recreation area, Leon Day Park sits right next door within Baltimore’s largest park, Gwynns Falls/Leakin. Leon Day has football and baseball fields, as well as open green space and a playground. Locals can walk to Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park’s trailheads that connect to over 20 miles of hiking paths through the 1,200-acre woodland. The Carrie Murray Nature Center also operates within Gwynn Falls/Leakin and offers educational events, like nature walks, and a variety of animal exhibits. On rainy days, locals have indoor exercise options. Cahill Recreational Center, located in Gwynn Falls/Leakin and built in 2021, replaced the center that was constructed in the 1970s. Cahill features rock climbing walls, a pool and spaces for performances or guest speakers. Folks can take group classes, like yoga and dance, and children can join the theater program. The rec center not only promotes fitness, but also community involvement and collaboration.Nearby Baltimore City Public Schools
Kindergarteners through third graders can begin their education at Billie Holiday Elementary, which is not yet ranked on Niche. Billie Holiday opened in 2021, bringing in students from the neighborhood’s former primary school, Alexander Hamilton Elementary, which will soon be the new Intergenerational Center. Students then transition to Katherine Johnson Global Academy, formerly known as Calverton Elementary/Middle. Named after the mathematician behind the nation’s first flights to space and the first African American woman to work as a scientist for NASA, Katherine Johnson Global Academy enrolls third through eighth graders. The academy is also unranked by Niche and opened in 2021, as well. For high school, students choose where to enroll, but the nearest option is Carver Vocational-Technical High. Carver earns a D-plus grade on Niche and provides career preparation and certification for students. Some pathways include business management, early childhood education and construction design and management.Shopping at Mondawmin and local takeaway spots
While the neighborhood is mostly residential, people don’t have to travel far for shopping and dining needs. About 2 miles away, Mondawmin Mall has national retailers, like Ross, chain restaurants and a Shoppers supermarket and pharmacy. For a quick stop, Price’s Grocery & Variety has been a family-owned neighborhood convenience store for three generations. Restaurants in the area primarily consist of fast and casual establishments that offer takeout and delivery options. Edmondson Fried Chicken, Good Fortune and Crazy Down Home Chicken and Seafood are just a few of the many spots available off Poplar Grove Street and other surrounding roads.MTA buses, nearby highways and the closest metro
Commuters can hop on local Maryland Transit Administration or CityLink Blue buses to get downtown, about 3 miles east. The closest metro stop goes through Mondawmin subway station, which is within about 2 miles. For those who prefer to drive, Route 40, Hilton Parkway and West North Avenue border the neighborhood, connecting locals to interstates 695, 83 and 70. In less than 15 miles, drivers can reach Towson, Glen Burnie and Pikesville on these routes. Flights take off about 10 miles away from Baltimore/Washington International Airport, which is available by bus or metro access, as well.
