Small suburb on Baltimore's outskirts
Hamilton is a quiet suburb settled in northeast Baltimore, bordered by Glenmoor and Hamilton avenues to the north and south, and Belair and Hartford roads to the east and west. Often considered part of the larger Lauraville area, the community is “small town living in a big city and is truly one of the neighborhoods that give Baltimore the ‘Smalltimore’ name,” says Kelly Knock, a Realtor with Compass who has lived in Baltimore since 2008. “It’s a very neighborly area where you know many community members. It also attracts buyers who want a yard but love city living because it’s still within city limits.”
Hamilton offers a quiet suburban community just a few minutes from Downtown Baltimore.

20th-century homes on well-kept yards
Though most homes in Hamilton were built in the early to mid-20th century, buyers will have a variety of styles to choose from. Wood-framed American Foursquares coalesce with small bungalows, brick colonials featuring bay windows and Queen Anne homes with large front porches. Prices range from $182,000 to $360,000, depending on the home's size and condition. One of the added perks of the neighborhood is the yard space it provides. Along with the tree cover in the area, homeowners have added personal touches like small gardens and shrubbery. Duplexes and townhouses are also situated along Hamilton’s sidewalk-lined streets and sell for $135,000 to $240,000.
Many of the larger homes in Hamilton have grand front porches that wrap around homes.

Everyday essentials and eateries along Harford Road
Eclectic and colorful storefronts line Harford Road along Glehnam-Belford’s western end, putting everyday essentials within walking distance. There are banks, CVS, salons, dry cleaners and beauty supply stores situated between popular local eateries. Dessert lovers will want to head to Maillard Patisserie, which Knock says “has the best croissants in town.” Many locals also start their morning at Emma’s Tea Spot. Take a step back in time at Lost in the 50’s Diner, an old-school breakfast joint with checkboard flooring and string lights hanging above vinyl booths and bar stools. The seats at The Hamilton Sports Bar and Grill fill up quickly when the University of Maryland or Baltimore Orioles are playing. For groceries, there’s a Harvest Fare Supermarket just around the corner.

Holiday events at Walther Gardens
For fresh ingredients and a fun time with neighbors, people head to the Lauraville Farmers Market along Harford Road. It’s held every Tuesday afternoon from June through September, and features produce from local farms, artisans selling handmade goods, music and drinks. For more events coinciding with the seasons, Knock says a popular spot is “The Margaret Cleveland at Walther Gardens. It’s a unique, mixed-use nursery with a sno-ball stand and high-end décor shops.” The venue hosts Harvest Fest in October, where people can take live painting classes, decorate pumpkins and play games. In the winter, Walther Gardens is the go-to place to buy a Christmas tree.

Attending Baltimore City Public Schools
Students attend Baltimore City Public Schools and may begin their education at Glenmount Elementary/Middle School, which serves kindergarten through eighth grades and earns a C from Niche. Other students will filter through Hamilton Elementary and Booker T. Washington Middle schools, which get C-plus and C-minus ratings, respectively. At C-minus-rated Patterson High School, students can enroll in carer pathway programs, including the Academy of Engineering, health and Biosciences or graphic communications. City Neighbors High, a charter school earning a C from Niche, sits in the heart of the neighborhood and offers a project-based learning curriculum. After graduating, students can attend one of the two universities in the city – Morgan State University or the University of Maryland – which are also major employers in the area.

Birdwatching and peaceful lakeside strolls
Behind the homes on Fairwood Avenue is Fairwood Forest, a 4-acre green space with nearly two dozen species of trees. The woodlands give people room to roam and are popular among birdwatchers because they are hawk flyways, meaning hundreds of birds are sighted there yearly. Burdick Park has something for kids and pups, with a playground and fenced-in dog park. The community pocket park also features tennis courts and grassy fields where people picnic under the shade of mature trees. Locals also head to nearby Herring Run Park for walks or bike rides on a streamside trail. The park sits adjacent to Lake Montebello, where people can stroll around the lake’s 1.5-mile perimeter or toss a Frisbee around an 18-hole disc golf course.

Locals can reach the heart of downtown Baltimore by driving nearly 6 miles along Harford Avenue. There, they’ll find a host of eateries and entertainment venues like The Walters Art Museum, The Baltimore Symphony, the Hippodrome Theatre and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. There’s also an Amtrak stop at Penn Station. The commute to medical care is shorter; just under 2.5 miles away is MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. Maryland Transit Administration stops are dotted along Carter Avenue and Harford Road, connecting locals to surrounding amenities.
