Quirky businesses and community events north of downtown Baltimore
Known as one of the quirkiest communities in Baltimore, the neighborhood of Hampden is perfect for those who enjoy trendy bars, artsy shops and restaurants. “You’ve got the old-school institutions, dive bars like Frazier’s, right next door to the more upscale spots like The Food Market,” says Mike Sass, a longtime area resident among Hampden’s eclectic community of neighbors. “The thing you have to understand is this area was a mill town. So, you’ve got a mix of blue-collar working-class people, students and young professionals, so it's kind of evolved over time to meet everybody’s needs,” Sass says. Hampden is centrally located, with the Johns Hopkins University campus and the Baltimore Museum of Art to the east and Druid Hill Park and the Maryland Zoo to the west. With an abundance of places to gather and connect, Hampden has all the charm of a cozy Main Street town within the bustling city of Baltimore.

The Avenue’s unique bars, shops and restaurants
The Avenue is the local name for bustling 36th Street, which is home to an array of restaurants, bars, galleries and specialty boutiques. There are many favorite shops around town, such as Atomic Books for comics and novels, Lovely Yarns for knitting supplies and the Double Dutch Boutique clothing store. Ma Petite Shoes imports chocolates from all over the globe to sell alongside an assortment of high-end shoes. “You can get spoiled living in Hampden,” Sass says. “You’ve got The Avenue right there. Good coffee. Atomic Books, Golden West, The Charmery. You don’t even have to go into the City, because everything’s right here.” Hungry? Souvlaki serves traditional Greek fare in an attempt at a classic Aegean atmosphere. Next door, Golden West Cafe’s funky Southwestern vibes and vegan options make it a hotspot. The Bluebird Cocktail Room is like a speakeasy with a library theme, known for its small plates and decorative chandeliers. When it’s time for dessert, The Charmery has hand-dipped ice cream and a range of rotating seasonal flavors.
