An evolving and distinctive East Baltimore neighborhood
Highlandtown in East Baltimore was originally established in 1867 and proved to be a landing ground for immigrants from Germany, Poland and Italy. Throughout the 19th century, it became known as one of the most diverse working-class communities in the city. It retains this reputation today, with a new generation of immigrants adding their cultural flair. “I grew up in East Baltimore, and my family always went to Highlandtown because that’s where Polish people in the city shopped,” says Realtor Mary Widomski with Cummings & Co., who grew up across Patterson Park in Butcher’s Hill. “Today, the culture of Highlandtown has really changed. There is a Catholic Church there — Sacred Heart of Jesus — that has attracted a very large Latin American population, and that has totally transformed it over the last 20 years. It’s a wonderful part of town.” This transformation has included the development of a popular art scene and the annual celebration of several cultural festivals throughout the year. But regardless of these changes, Highlandtown continues to leave its distinctive mark on East Baltimore.

No shortage of grocery and restaurant options in Highlandtown
Over the past two decades, Highlandtown has become known for offering authentic Latin American cuisine and shopping. “As you go north through the community, you have some homes that have been converted into coffee shops, restaurants and even an art gallery. It’s a real potpourri of different options,” Widomski says. Long-standing establishments like Sally O’s on Gough Street are now complemented by popular options like Taqueria Vargas and Restaurant on Highland Avenue. Folks can pick up spices, steaks and tamales at Tex-Mex Corner Deli and Grocery Store. Fresh produce is available at Mercado Cinco De Mayo or The Markets at Highlandtown. The nearest Target is just 1 mile south of Highlandtown in The Shops at Canton Crossing. “Highlandtown is also less than a mile from Brewer’s Hill, Butcher’s Hill and Fells Point,” Widomski says. “So it’s very easy to get anything you want when you live in that part of the city.”

Parkside rowhouses with over 100 years of history painting window screens
Highlandtown is packed with block after block of traditional Baltimore row houses, many built prior to 1952 with brick or grey stone facades. “In general, the homes on that side of Patterson Park are newer than the ones to the west,” Widomski says. Houses closer to Patterson Park have second-story bay windows that extend over covered front porches. Short marble front stoops lead directly out to the sidewalks, which are speckled with tall or growing shade trees. These homes, which come in two-, three- and four-bedroom models, can cost anywhere from $100,000 to $450,000. Houses that offer a view of Patterson Park can reach price points above $500,000. For over 100 years, residents of Highlandtown have decorated their homes with painted window screens to brighten passersby's views. This tradition has become such a community staple that one of the several neighborhood associations offers a self-guided painted screen tour of the neighborhood. Neighbors of those with painted screens in the windows should not be surprised to see delighted tourists snapping pictures with their phones throughout the year.

Festivals, swimming, skating and more in Patterson Park
No front stoop in Highlandtown is farther than a mile from Patterson Park, one of Baltimore’s most beloved green spaces. Residents of South Ellwood Street can, from their west-facing bay windows, look out at the Patterson Park Annex, a wide-open athletic field with a pair of baseball diamonds and a swooping jogging path that forms a half-moon beneath some sparse trees. Three crosswalks on Linwood Avenue connect the annex to Patterson Park proper. During the summer, kids swim at the public pool here while canoes avoid the fishing line of local anglers at the boat lake. Outdoor concerts and festivals are other common occurrences during the warmer months. In the winter, the Mimi DiPietro Family Skating Center hosts youth hockey leagues and public ice skating sessions.

Film screenings, live music and interactive exhibitions are just a few of the offerings on tap. Two of the most popular events are the annual Marquee Ball and the Great Halloween Lantern Parade and Festival. The CityLink bus system services the neighborhood, making it simple for residents to get around without a car. “You can walk across the park to Brewer’s Hill, and Fells Point and Canton are right there as well,” Widomski says. “There’s also Greektown to the east, so you have a lot of good options if you want to stretch your legs.” To the north of the neighborhood, Pulaski Highway, also known as Route 40, provides the most direct route to The Johns Hopkins Hospital 2 miles away.

Some neighborhoods are great, some are unsavory. It's very close to transit lines (including express bus and commuter lines) and easy access to 95, 895, and 695. It has plenty of access to grocery stores and any type of restaurant you can imagine. It's also very accessible to Patterson park, fells point, and canton.
