Lauraville
Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21214

Big trees, little streets
"Lauraville and other parts of that zip code tend to be the next step for those who maybe were previously living in a rowhome, but now they want a little more space," Bamberger suggests. "It is a historic area of Baltimore, and there are a lot of charming homes, but you still get the benefits of being within the city." Wooden frame and shingle American Foursquares sit alongside Craftsman bungalows on these narrow streets, featuring three to four bedrooms and driveways leading past tree-shaded front yards and spacious porches. Its historic status means Lauraville offers fixer-uppers priced from $125,000 to $300,000 and newly renovated, move-in-ready homes from $290,000 to $450,000.Afternoons at Lake Montebello
Only a few minutes' drive from Morgan State and less than two miles from Lauraville is Lake Montebello, a reservoir offering scenic views and a 1.3-mile loop trail. "It's definitely walkable from Lauraville, and people go there to bike, run, walk or just to hang out," Bamberger says. Herring Run flows in a ring around Lauraville past soccer fields at Herring Run Park, Brehms Lane Playground and Mount Pleasant Golf Course to the northeast; the paved trail meandering alongside its banks is often the site for cross-country races.Options for school-age Lauraville residents
Lauraville-based students can start their education at Garrett Heights Elementary Middle School, which Niche rates a C-minus. Established in 1899, Garrett Heights serves pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students and offers a strong core curriculum complemented by STEM, foreign language, arts, and music courses. Kids can also switch to Booker T. Washington Middle School, earning a C-minus, for sixth through eighth grade. They finish strong at Patterson High School, earning a C-minus, or at Frederick Douglass High School, earning a C. For higher education opportunities, nearby Morgan State University is a Carnegie-classified high research (R2) institution serving over 7700 students at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.A local market with an inspirational beginning
An abandoned gas station was repurposed In 2009 by the Lauraville community as a mural-decorated gathering place for all. Now, the lot is home to the seasonal Tuesday Market in Lauraville—which features produce from local farms, vendors, music and drinks—as well as community art projects, yard sales, holiday events, and more. Locals also mark their calendars to head down to Lake Montebello on the final weekend of September for The Lauraville Fair, which attracts over a thousand attendees and highlights local performers and small businesses.Getting around from Lauraville
Though most residents commute by car, Lauraville residents can walk to amenities in their peripherals. Bike lanes and bike-friendly roads also lead the 5 miles from Lauraville to downtown Baltimore, and MTA buses pick up riders along Harford Road. Bamberger says commuters can make it onto Interstate 95 in less than 10 minutes; from there, they can reach Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in 18 miles. In case of an emergency, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital welcomes patients just past the Morgan State Campus, 1.5 miles away. From Koco's Pub to SoHa
Lauraville locals can walk to Harford Road for a bite to eat at one of Baltimore's most popular spots. "Everyone knows Lauraville because Koco's Pub is right on that strip," Bamberger says. "It's a family-owned business, and you honestly cannot find a better crab cake—I'm not just saying that, everyone agrees. Maggie's Farm is also on that strip, and it's frequently known as one of the best restaurants in Baltimore City. It's got fantastic farm-to-table food." A bit further north is SoHa (South Harford Road), a shopping community where much-loved local chains like Papi's Taco Joint and Zeke's Coffee sit alongside gift shops, bookstores and more. As for groceries, residents stay on this street and head to Safeway or culturally-specific options like Royalty Food International Supermarket.
