From Little Bohemia to Madison-Eastend
The community of Madison-Eastend is a small neighborhood in East Baltimore, bordered to the north by the Amtrak railway and to the south by East Monument Street. Formerly known as “Little Bohemia,” the neighborhood was a hub in the early 19th century for Czech immigrants seeking work opportunities. Recent remodels and investment properties
Mostly constructed in the early 20th century, red brick row homes dominate Madison-Eastend, many of which are considered investment properties. Priced between $30,000 and $80,000, these two-story homes require a complete renovation prior to move-in. Recently remodeled and renovated spaces typically range between $100,000 and $250,000. Homes like these are becoming more frequent, while current residents beautify their own entryways with painted walls and front steps. Street parking is expected, but front lawns aren’t. Most homes do offer a cemented backyard space, however, where residents can grow potted plants or simply store their waste bins.

Both institutions enroll kindergarten through eighth grade and receive a C-minus on Niche. Families are offered a choice regarding high school, though many opt for Paul Laurence Dunbar High, which earns a C on Niche. Also known as P-TECH, it’s a specialized STEM school offering four-to-six-year programs for a diploma and/or a no-cost associate degree.
Green space at Bocek and Patterson
The community is home to Frank C. Bocek Park, a wide-open field where community sports leagues practice and play. Basketball and tennis courts are ideal for casual pick-up games, while unoccupied green space is ideal for dog owners. Patterson Park is only about a mile south, where 133 acres of greenery attract visitors from around the city. The Patterson Boat Lake has been around for ages, a landmark where many Baltimoreans claim to have caught their first fish. Mature trees compliment the wetlands, community garden, swimming pool and seasonal ice rink.

Community support and initiatives
Compared to the city’s other residential enclaves, Madison-Eastend suffers disproportionately from illnesses like cancer and HIV/AIDS. Contamination from nearby factories and refineries has led to pollution and even a brownfield in the area.
However, Madison-Eastend benefits from strong participation with the Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition (HEBCAC). A local nonprofit organization, HEBCAC “honors history and fosters strength, diversity and transformation” through career and housing services for youth, as well as substance abuse and recovery programs. Another community resource is the Eastside Career Center on East Madison Street. Coined as Baltimore’s One-Stop Career Center, this local resource is open weekly to the public and offers a variety of employment resources to assist individuals in supporting themselves and their family members.
