Colorfully painted Baltimore row houses
Throughout the community, early-1900s Italianate-style and swell-front row houses line the gridded city streets. While home exteriors may vary in terms of color and texture, each block tends to have a unified look and architectural style. On some blocks, short stone stairways lead directly from the narrow sidewalks to the arched front doors of two-bedroom homes. On others, colorfully painted brick porches offer shaded places to rest and watch passing traffic. Most residences have a small rear yard along the alley with a wooden fence for privacy. “Remington is still an affordable neighborhood, but it’s one of the fastest-appreciating neighborhoods in the city,” Garner says. “You have all the proximity of being in Hampden, popular for its shopping, dining and nightlife options, while the prices are still tracking behind theirs.” While 10 years ago, he says, buyers could find a renovated home for under $150,000, now prices tend to fall between $200,000 and $400,000.Wyman Park and nearby museums
Though there are a few small pocket parks and community gardens scattered throughout the area, the most substantial green spaces are the 88-acre Wyman Park and the additional 16 acres in Wyman Park Dell, which surround Johns Hopkins University. Wyman not only offers playgrounds and athletic fields but also access to a natural landscape shaded by tall beech and poplar trees. In the midst of the park is the 3-mile Stony Run Trail, which meanders along the contours of Stony Run Creek. Residents are also close to several museums, including the Baltimore Streetcar Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art. At the southern edge of the neighborhood, street art is preserved and celebrated in Graffiti Alley — the only spot in Baltimore where graffiti is legal.Baltimore City Public Schools near Remington
Students in Remington are served by Baltimore City Public Schools, which allows students to choose their own high schools. Many preschool through eighth-grade students learn at Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle School, which receives a C on Niche. Some students choose to attend ninth through 12th grades at the Academy for College and Career Exploration, rated a C-plus. ACCE offers dual-enrollment courses through Coppin State. With a portion of the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus within the neighborhood, continued learning opportunities are also nearby.Learning salsa, cake decorating and more in Remington
Individual shops, such as B. Willow and Chef Duff Goldman-owned Charm City Cakes, offer weekend classes and workshops where people can learn to make terrariums or decorate cakes. In addition, R. House hosts weekly salsa classes and jam sessions. Each May, Remfest, the neighborhood’s annual festival, takes place. The celebration features live music, street vendors and activities for kids.Getting around from Remington
Remington’s access to public transportation, employment opportunities and highways makes it appealing to commuters. Interstate 83 runs along the neighborhood’s western border, providing a direct path both into the city and out. Maryland Transit Administration buses stop in the neighborhood, primarily along Howard Street and Remington Ave and there is an MTA light rail station just a few blocks south of the neighborhood as well. Residents affiliated with Johns Hopkins University can use their shuttle services to get to and from the campus, though some homes are within walking distance of the campus. Amtrak’s Baltimore Penn Station is about 1 mile south, and from there, riders can take commuter trains to Washington, D.C.Shopping, dining and nightlife in Remington
Recent investments in Remington have brought new life to the neighborhood. “The biggest thing that this area was missing was an anchor tenant, and we have that now in R. House,” Garner says. A repurposed auto garage-turned-food-hall, R. House features 10 stalls with chefs who serve everything from Egyptian street food to Sicilian pastries. On nearly every corner, murals have popped up, marking the sides of vintage clothing stores, tattoo parlors and coffee shops. Shoppers from around Baltimore head to B. Willow, a plant shop that offers everything from Venus flytraps to trendy houseplants. Another community landmark is the PaperMoon Diner, a veteran establishment that “is filled with all kinds of toys and collectibles,” Garner says. “If you're interested in pop culture, it’s like visiting a museum while you eat your pancakes.” In the evenings, music lovers might stop by Ottobar, which hosts both local performers and nationally recognized musicians.Buyer considerations
As Remington was originally developed as an industrial neighborhood, those looking for a quiet suburban oasis may not find it a good match. Residents will likely hear the constant hum of interstate traffic and the occasional sounds of passing trains. In addition, the use of paints and other chemicals at the neighborhood’s current and former auto shops may be a concern for some buyers. Though some sections of the neighborhood are prone to flooding, most residential streets lie outside of flood zones.
