A community feeling with welcoming committees
Located in northeast Baltimore and considered a part of the greater Hamilton/Lauraville area, Westfield is filled with Cape Cods, expansive backyards and a community feel. “My partner and I moved here about six years ago and we’ve loved it ever since,” says Joseph Cleary, the vice-president for the Westfield Neighborhood Improvement Association (WNIA). “People here feel happy, they’re able to find community. Welcoming committees give new people a little welcome bag with gifts from some of the local stores.” Hardford Road has a line of restaurants and businesses, and since the road crosses through a section of the neighborhood, residents can walk to a local hangout spot. “It’s a suburban feel in the middle of the city,” Cleary says.
Cape Cods line the streets with some on-street parking
Most homes are bungalows or Cape Cods, with some scatterings of Foursquares, Craftsman, brick rowhomes and even some Dutch Colonial homes with Tudor Revival elements. Most homes sell between $180,000 for a home in need of renovations and $430,000 for a Craftsman built in 1930. Cape Cods and bungalows can sell starting around $200,000 and reach $400,000. Some homes still retain original aspects, such as hardwood floors and may have undergone internal renovations, usually with the kitchen or bathroom. Many homes consist of brick or shiplap exteriors and sit closer together. However, they still have room for a backyard, a rarity for neighborhoods closer to downtown Baltimore. Roads may feel closer together due to the towering trees, placed between a sidewalk and the road. The neighborhood also has some one-way streets, occasionally without garages or driveways, leaving residents to park on the street. There are also a few rowhomes within the neighborhood, in the typical Baltimore style.
There are many charming and affordable housing options for those looking for quiet in the city.
Properties in Westfield, Maryland on average range from $200,000 - $400,000.

Neighborhood association with informal meetups and neighbor spotlights
“Our neighborhood association is very active,” says Cleary, “We have a Holiday Party in December, there was a Chili Cook-Off in February. There are even some neighborhood happy hours at the local bars.” In the spring, there was an Egg Hunt and Spring Celebration at the Church of the Messiah. “We do something called Community Charm; we interview a neighbor, have a little photoshoot, get to know them and then share on Facebook,” says Cleary. “It’s another way of building the community.”
Neighborhood elementary/middle school and choice of high school
Students in the neighborhood can walk to Hamilton Elementary/Middle School for kindergarten through eighth grade. Hamilton receives a C-plus from Niche. The Baltimore City Public Schools district does not zone for high school students, so families can choose which high school to attend. Students may attend Reginald F. Lewis High School, with a C-minus from Niche, where the student-teacher ratio is 20-to-1. At Lewis High School, students can participate in Advanced Placement courses in Arts and English.

Four bus lines and major artery road through Baltimore
There are two bus lines on Harford Road, which crosses through the neighborhood to the northwest and two bus lines on East Northern Parkway, which acts as the northeastern border of the neighborhood. “Harford Road is the main artery of the city,” says Cleary. “It goes all the way north to the edge of the city and all the way south to the Patapsco River.” Interstate 695, which used to go in a circle around Baltimore before the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge due to a ship strike, is about 2 miles to the northeast.

Single family homes in Westfield are relatively affordable and have large back yards. It's an ethnically and economically diverse community with good schools. It's a very laid-back place to live in the city.
