A commuter neighborhood in Northwest Baltimore
Home to the Roger Avenue Metro train station, Woodmere is a commuter’s dream with lines of row houses and access to Reisterstown Road. “Woodmere is centrally located, so you’re not far from the county or downtown. You’re also at one of the major arteries at the Northern Parkway, so you can go either east or west in Baltimore County,” says Diane Flohr, an agent with Cummings & Co. Realty who has been selling in the Baltimore area for about 11 years now. In fact, the area is so car-friendly that the Baltimore City Department of Motor Vehicles is right in the center of town. Part of Northwest Baltimore, the neighborhood benefits from being near downtown without all the hustle and bustle of the inner city. Instead, the subdivisions are quieter, with larger backyards that give row house neighbors a little breathing room. The CAP Index score for crime is a 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4, with an 8 out of 10 score for homicide.
Spacious yards and classic Baltimore brick row houses
The neighborhood is mostly filled with row houses with small front porches, fenced front and back yards, and generous space for entertaining or playing. Because there aren’t many single-family homes, these outdoor spaces can make each property feel bigger. For families who want to share only one wall, a few duplex row houses with unique designs on either side can be found on Newton Avenue. When it comes to potential neighbors in Woodmere, “You’ve got a little bit of everyone. There are first-time homebuyers looking to get a decent price on a home close to areas that may be more outpriced. You’ve also got investors going in there to buy homes they want to rent out,” Flohr says. “There are also people who have lived in the neighborhood for years, like retirees, who want to pass down homes to their children.” Homes up for auction can range in price from $80,000 to $120,000, while direct-sale properties ready for move-in tend to cost between $135,000 and $250,000.
Rogers Ave Metro Station and navigating Northwest Baltimore
Woodmere benefits from the Rogers Avenue Metro Station, which is a commuter rail that takes passengers south to downtown Baltimore and north up to Owings Mills. Whether commuting to work or catching an Orioles game, hopping on and off the rail means beating the traffic and making it downtown in around 20 minutes. “Woodmere isn’t far from Woodberry, and if you go further east, you’ll hit Hampden and Remington. You’re also close to Reisterstown Road, 695 and I-83 South,” Flohr says. For those who prefer to drive, Interstate 83 makes it easy to get downtown, which is about 9 miles south. For weekends away, the Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) is about 19 miles south via Interstate 695. For emergencies or checkups, the nearest medical center is the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, about 2 miles northeast of Woodmere.
Locally owned shops and restaurants on Reisterstown Road
Local shops and restaurants are located along Reisterstown Road, one of the area’s major thoroughfares. Style Stage Salon has been catering to the community for years, and Friends Food Mart convenience store makes it easy to grab a few essential items. Locally owned restaurants include Exclusive Island Taste Cuisine, which serves fried snapper and grilled jerk chicken. Soul and Sea Cafe has a wide selection of comfort food, including pepper steak, lamb chops and smothered chicken platters. For prescriptions or household essentials, Walgreens is right on the corner of the Northern Parkway. Drivers can also head less than 1 mile north to the Reisterstown Road Plaza, which has a Giant grocery store, a few fast-food chains and The Home Depot. Though the main road is very convenient, homebuyers should be aware that traffic noise on Reisterstown Road can be quite loud throughout the day for those living nearby.
Baltimore City Public School partnerships with the YMCA
Students in Woodmere are zoned to first attend either Arlington Elementary School or Pimlico Elementary Middle School for kindergarten through fifth grade. Then all students may attend Pimlico Elementary Middle School for sixth through eighth grade. The Baltimore City Public School District allows students to apply for the high school they wish to attend. The nearest high school to Woodmere is Forest Park High School. Forest Park High partners with the local YMCA, which helps its students learn to lead and earn community service hours and college credit. All three schools are graded a C-minus on Niche.
Pimlico Race Course and the C.C. Jackson Recreation Center
Though the backyards in Woodmere are quite spacious, the little neighborhood of Arlington to the north has a few pocket parks and a recreation center to explore. Arlington Elementary School’s playground, basketball court and garden are available after school hours. In Central Park Heights, the C.C. Jackson Recreation Center is a free resource for registered residents. The center's outdoor pool, indoor dance room, lounge, game room and fitness center are open to the public. Outside, folks can enjoy the sports courts and fields, reserve them for a game, or play on the playground. North of the recreation center is the Pimlico Race Course, a horse racetrack that becomes very lively during the Preakness Stakes event, which is held on the third Saturday of every May.
