Residents rally around sports, schools and small-town spirit
Bamberg's friendly, small-town vibe is helping residents recover from a tough 2024. After being hit by a tornado and a tropical storm throughout the year, much of the progress toward Bamberg's revitalization was destroyed. "We had several older historical buildings that were being converted into housing and shops," says lifelong Bamberg resident and Realtor Runelle Weeks with Hubbard Bowers Inc. "But we have a new mayor, and for the first time in a long time, there's new construction. We take great pride in our town and what's coming next." Despite hardship, the community is still as tight-knit as ever. "We have a very active fan base following our high school sports and Little League teams. It's just the kind of town where everyone seems to get along," Weeks says.
Ranch, Craftsman and cottage homes priced under $300K
Primarily developed in the early to mid-20th century, homes in Bamberg are on modest, woodsy lots under an acre. There are many classic ranch-style, Craftsman-style and cottages priced between $100,000 and $300,000. As homes expanded from the heart of Bamberg, acreage increased, including plots of two acres and more. These include Victorian-style, farmhouse style and New Traditional houses that are often priced between $500,000 and $950,000, depending on the amount of acreage. There are also a few homes from the late 20th to early 21st centuries in the Lakewood subdivision on the River Birch Golf Course. These homes range from ranch-style to Neoclassical Revival to New Traditional, often priced between $160,00 and $525,000.
Bamberg schools range from C to B with technical programs
Bamberg County School District serves over 1,700 students and scores an overall C-plus from Niche. Richard Carroll Elementary earns a C, and Bamberg-Ekhardt Middle earns a C-plus. Bamberg-Ekhardt High scores an overall B. Niche also ranks the high school 12 out of 90 standout high schools in South Carolina. Students here can enroll in several career and technical education pathways, including fashion design, digital publication design and agricultural education.
Bamberg blends small-town parks with outdoor adventure spots
Bamberg has a few casual recreation areas that bring residents together. Robert E. Foster Park offers courts for tennis and pickleball games, a volleyball court, a playground and picnic areas. Ness Sports Complex is where youth and club leagues gather for ball games. Residents may book public tee times for a day on the green at River Birch Golf Course. Veterans Memorial Park hosts events throughout the year, like an annual Christmas tree lighting and parade. There is also a yearly Juneteenth Celebration with line dancing, food vendors and live music.
Several green spaces nearby include Barnwell State Park, 17 miles from Bamberg. The park offers fishing, kayaking and swimming in any of its three small lakes, plus trails that meander through its pine forested grounds. Residents may also choose to take out a boat or kayak onto the North Fork Edisto River at Ness Boat Landing, about 8 miles away. "The Edisto River is one of North America's longest free-flowing blackwater rivers. It draws a lot of kayakers and fishers, and there are many landings nearby to take out a kayak or boat," Weeks says.
Churches, salons and local shops anchor the community
As Bamberg recovers from severe weather damage, several businesses and restaurants hold steadfast along Main Highway and Heritage Highway. There are churches, supply shops, pharmacies, salons and small businesses. Weeks mentions that residents hope more life will be brought to the area, especially with the new construction. Residents can pick up groceries at Piggly Wiggly, Dollar General and Dollar Tree. B&B Meats and Fish & Family Kitchen, a butcher shop, also serves breakfast and lunch. The Bamberg Farmers Market sells fresh produce, art and food each Saturday between March and November. "Of course, you can get anything shipped to your home from a bigger store, but we like to support our farmers and local grocery stores here," Weeks says. There are several local chain restaurants here, like Duke's Barbeque of Bamberg and Little Howie's, a hamburger and fried chicken joint.
