Amenities and attractions create an active lifestyle in Central Bangor

Central Bangor is the beating heart of its city, resting along the Penobscot River, roughly 20 miles from the coast of Maine. Downtown’s government buildings, local commerce and museums combine with a system of greenways and parks to support a thriving community with an active lifestyle. As the area expands outwards, subdivisions with historic and contemporary homes join the landscape, creating a robust housing selection.

Single and multifamily properties spanning a century

In addition to downtown’s Federal-style apartment buildings, Central Bangor expands into multiple subdivisions. Broadway Historic District is filled with traditional multistory homes built in the 1880s and early 1900s. Some are Colonial-inspired with simple exteriors, while others are Victorians and Queen Annes with tower-like structures, bay windows and front porches. Bungalows from the 1930s to 1950s are also found in the historic district. These older homes can cost as low as $85,000 or as high as $570,000, based on their condition.

Little City, Tree Streets and Bangor Gardens are other subdivisions, where houses are accompanied by grassy lawns and mature trees. Beyond the older multistory homes, these neighborhoods have minimal traditional single-story, ranch-style and split-level homes from the 1950s to 1970s. There are also a handful of contemporary homes from the 1980s to 2010s on the outskirts of the area. Prices range from $190,000 to $540,000, depending on location and square footage. Townhouses and condos are sprinkled throughout the area, with units costing around $200,000 to $300,000.

Retail and restaurants downtown and on Broadway

Downtown Bangor is the city and neighborhood’s main commercial area. “It's really nice because there are so many stores close to each other, so you can keep hopping from store to store,” says Lacy Haggerty, the property manager of Bangor House Apartments, who lives in the area. Everything from clothing boutiques to music and antique shops are lined along Main Street. When it comes to food, Portland Pie Company serves specialty pizzas, and Evenrood’s is more upscale with American classics and seafood dishes. Harvest Moon Deli is a sandwich shop known for its fun names like “bacon care of business" and "limp brisket". On Sundays, the Bangor Farmers Market sells fresh produce and food products.

For more options, Broadway Shopping Center is less than 2 miles north of downtown, with name-brand retailers like T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods. Fast-food eateries include Pizza Hut, McDonald’s and Starbucks. Hannaford is the area’s grocery store.

Museums, venues and events that entertain

Museums in Central Bangor provide entertainment and instruction. The Maine Discovery Museum offers hands-on, interactive exhibits for people of all ages, including reptile rooms and a pretend doctor’s office. “My daughter just loves it there,” Haggerty says. “There is a little kitchen there, which is always a mess, which shows just how often it is used and how much kids like to play there.” There’s also the Zillman Art Museum with its modern and contemporary pieces.

Downtown Bangor hosts multiple events throughout the year, including the Bangor State Faire, Summer Sidewalk Art Festival, First Friday Art Walks and a holiday tree lighting ceremony, among others. The Maine Savings Amphitheater and Cross Insurance Center are two popular event spaces that host year-round events such as monster truck rallies and concerts.

Staying active in Bangor’s greenways and parks

Norumbega Parkway is one of downtown’s few green spaces. The linear park is along the Kenduskeag Stream and outfitted with walkways, park benches and gardens. There’s also Pierce Park, which sits adjacent to the public library and has rolling grassy fields. The Bangor Waterfront sits along the Penobscot River and has access to the Penobscot River Walkway. “It’s just beautiful there. I used to walk there on my lunches,” Haggerty says.

As for the rest of Central Bangor, several parks are found farther out in the neighboring subdivisions. Broadway Park has a playground and outdoor workout space, while Garland Street Park has athletic fields for soccer and baseball. There’s also a dog park and community garden in the area.
